KHS Montana Pro parts bin sh*tter

So, inspired by @Tsundere ‘s excellent Anti-theft parts bin sh*tter thread, I’m going to mess around with an old KHS bike that has been banging around in the family for a while. A change in my commuting habits means I could do with a lock up and leave bike; but the commute includes a 300m climb...

    '86ish Gitane Spécial

Very cool: looks like it’s got that nifty internal brazing you sometimes get on good MBKs and Peugeots.

Gaffer Tape, Baler Twine, your tools that aren't tools?

+1 for bent spokes in all sorts of hooking and gauging operations, and sockets as drifts and bearing pressing tools in a vice. & Nutri bar wrappers for emergency tyre lining. Also: Wooden skewer for so many poking without scratching needs, and that badly used screwdriver you nicked from your...

    Anti-theft parts bin sh*tter.

Like you, I’m going for a nice frame (KHS Pro) and good bearings made to look a shitter. (Though not with your paint skill, level) Hex bolt skewers are a great idea (especially if not shiny) Luckily I’ve got some 80s nutted wheels; putting a shit lock on and walking away is the moment of truth.

Cammo has come out superbly. Are you keeping it quick release? I’m thinking solid axles with nuts, and a bolt on seatpost; and no expensive U locks to draw attention : a 1980s chain-in-a-plastic-sleeve-combination-lock draped between the top tube and lampost would set it off a treat.

Shimano 600 rd & Dura Ace 7 speed free wheel? Will the indexing still work?

IIRC, things get weird with Dura Ace 8 sp, but lots of compatibility otherwise. I’m using 7 spd shimano 600 shifters & 6208 RD and a campag freewheel. Have a browse with Sheldon Spacing Compatibility

Some sort of Claud Butler? Who else was hanging onto lugs with triple toptube cable runs and double mudguard eyelets?

Those are big numbers: are people reporting bikes stolen when they haven’t been? (Eg Dad buys student offspring a bike. Student rides bike and then leaves it outside a bar, can’t remember where, but claims on insurance.) Have no idea if this is even a thing, but even with faceoffbook there...

@Tsundere has hit a nerve here with the PBS build, so apologies for thread spamming; but to @fearfactoryüberalles point, I think donations are a good source of PBS material: my plan is to build one from a frame that was mine, got borrowed, was used by two kids as they grew up and is now abandoned.

Think we’re prolly soon going to need a “show us your Anti-theft parts bin sh*tter” thread. Will be making modest strides in this direction shortly.

As @Markybeau suggests, a subscription order: get enough interest (some sort of deposit?) then pull the trigger. I’m in for 2.

Sealed bearings lube or no lube?

So, I’ve been fettling a road rear wheel built round a Novatec hub (press fit, not cup and cone - what a fascinating modern world we inhabit…) ; will be replacing the 6902 bearings. Question is, would you just pop in the new bearings or (re) lube them first? If lube, then what sort? Replacement...

    Joe Waugh R653 £100

Eh? It’s a 653 frame (that means 753 forks) with some nice components for £100: I don’t get the the a band on FD fear? Edit: ah ok - no left hand down tube shifter boss. As you were.

Would it be sacrilege to put anything other that grip shift & coda levers on a Cannondale F series?

Not sure it’s that deep? I can’t cope with press press shifters so would go twist grip. What’s the story on the heroic stem: did they come like that originally?

Which period correct brake levers to pair with XT thumb shifters?

Which xt thumbies: 6 or 7 speed? 6 speed M730 4 finger bad boys (Kit Kat) 7 speed M733 2/3 finger poster boys (Twix)

    A Very British Klunker

Very cool. If you work on the basis that only the middle chainring does the full range of the freewheel does that help? Also what’s the rear mech: think I’ve got a suntour cyclone GT that can wrap 34t somewhere.
