CIOCC San Cristobal - Tom Crowther

Sorry, now that I've looked at your lug again, because the photo is not clear, I thought it has a different cutout.

Old frame, new parts - Your thoughts

My view is that old bikes should be owned and used for what they are. If you want ergo/sti, 10 speeds, dual pivots then get a new/modern bike.

CIOCC San Cristobal - Tom Crowther

Err...your frame doesn't have this shape of cutout on the lug, only on the bb shell. So the only thing that could possibly connect your frame to Ciocc is the bb cutout, which could have used by other builders.

    Finally.......A Rourkie

A leather saddle is completely wrong for this bike, IMO.

    Finally.......A Rourkie

The front mech could be Gran Sport, which was the same as (N) Record but without the cutouts.

    Finally.......A Rourkie

Not 1987. I'd guess early 80s, based on: tubing sticker nutted brakes fork crown band on gear levers and front mech transfers on white bands similar to Ian Cammish's early 80s Rourke bike.

Team Quest -1990's - anyone heard of them ?

Seems to be a bike shop's own brand: http://www.questbikes.co.uk/ The shop is called "The Bike Shop"* in NW London. *stupid name

Here are some pictures of my Cinelli frame

Here's a Cinelli I saw once. It doesn't have the distinctive Cinelli seat lug cluster and the lugs are the sort you see on heavy city bikes.

Looking for a Condor italia frame - 1980's

That's the cost of a new frame! Just as a guide, Mercian prices: New top tube £95.00 + VAT New down tube £95.00 + VAT New pair fork blades and dropouts £105.00 + VAT Frame and forks stove enamelled in enamel or polychromatic £120.00 + VAT and there are some builders who are cheaper...

what is the best tubular rim?

Medaille d'Or, now that's a lightweight rim at 300g, lovely rim sticker with the olympic rings. I've got a nos pair in 36 holes. I suppose they're similar to the GEL 280, which I do use in 28s, with care.

what is the best tubular rim?

I don't think GP4s had heat treatment, Mavic claimed the hard anodising made it stiffer, dubious imho. It was the SSC which was supposed to be stronger.

Why are crank arms longer these days?

They might be "long" cranks as in longer than 170mm, but in proportion to his leg length they are still short. The riders who are actually using long cranks in proportion to their leg length are shorter people. A 155cmm person using 165mm cranks will be using longer cranks than a 200cm person...

Using an MTB rise stem on a Road Setup

Using a stem like that would mean your bars are far too high, if not then your frame is too small, ie head tube is too short. But that is the "normal" road bike position, perhaps you might need high bars for some reason, eg a bad back.

what is the best tubular rim?

How long is a piece of string? IIRC the Arc-en-Ciels are about 350g but the GP4s are 400g. Another thing that might affect your choice is the finish. I now prefer unanodised silver rims; dark anodised rims look good when new but they look awful after you'ved use brakes on them.

Tubular tyre glueing -- advice needed!

I think this might be the problem, try putting the final layer on the rim and then mount the tub straight away.

Why are crank arms longer these days?

That would like me at a bit below average height using 100mm cranks, or something like that. Those cranks will be very short for a person of that height, with the pedal at the top of the stroke, I bet their thigh will be at 45 degrees. If you look at someone riding a bike, you can easily tell...

Mavic GL330 or Mach CD 2

The GL330 has exactly the same shape as GP4, SSC, Monthlery etc, ie the classic shallow box section sprint rims. Real weight is about 350g. Whereas the Mach 2CD has the later deeper semi-aero profile like the current typical HP rims. My choice would be the GL330. If you're going to use...

Who wants "Campy" removed from this forum?

Who wants to see the word "Campy" obliterated on this forum? If someone types it into their message, it should automatically come out as "Campagnolo" after it's posted. I gather the mods can do this in their settings to prevent unwanted words to appear in posts. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Soldering gear and brake cable ends?

I tried it once but it didn't work. I don't use those cable end things, they actually squash the cable. Which is fine if you never remove the inner from the outer. Ideally I'd solder the ends, second best is make a clean cut and just leave it.

    Which Tyres do You use?

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on which way you look at it, there's very few tyres currently available which look correct, ie black tread with amber walls. So an easy choice: Michelin Dynamic for narrow tyres Panaracer Pasela for med width Michelin World Tour for wider. There...
