BoTM Bike of The Month November 2024 "European Special" now taking entries

I have a 1985 Peugeot Orient Express, with a lugged frame, that I picked up at a thrift store for $10 about 10 years ago. It’s still scratched up as found. I’ve ridden it a lot on trail rides and it reminds me of my Schwinn klunkers. The problem is it’s not really a European bicycle. It’s made...

    Show us your BREEZER

A TA touring crank and chainrings are pretty expensive. The crank is very noticeable but things like Campy drops and Phil hubs are not as noticeable so I’m using alternatives. Stickers to fake it up are cheap. I have the TA crank and a nice Brooks B71.

I might sell the one I’m working on, but to break-even it would cost-a-lotta.

    Black or stainless spokes?

I only break black spokes. Black can cover cheap crummy metal.

Chainsuck - where did it go?

Most of my riding is at RAMBA, (iron range) Range Area Mountain Bike Association. The trails are hand cut, sludge hammers, shovels and chisels, no machine grooming, no flow, just rough. When it rains it’s slippery clay made from iron ore dust in the ground. The pink stains never come out so wear...

Chainsuck - where did it go?

1x is a sales gimmick, bike companies telling us what we need. Lots of that from the inception of mountain biking, bar ends, slingshot frames, 1.9 tires, etc, etc. The 1X is too limiting. I can’t go fast enough during a 100 k mountain bike race on the gravel or short gravel connections. Then I...

    40’s Schwinn DX klunker Build?

I’d get Araya wheel stickers. No one could tell they aren’t the real thing.

    40’s Schwinn DX klunker Build?

Here is how I shimmed my motorcycle levers to accept the smaller bicycle cables. I used a bicycle brake adjusting barrel and a small thin brass pipe from the hardware store.

    Early MTB photos.

You could always build one. Just go slow. It took me a year+.

    Surface rust removal..Orbit America

I use a cup wire brush in my 10,000 rpm hand grinder. Then I place the frame in a bath of phosphoric acid. I dilute it with water, enough to cover the frame. To keep the rust from reforming I wipe it down with a marine primer, Ospho.

1931 Claud Buttler DHS (Dennis Sutton Horn) designed track bike. Dennis was an Olympian and needed to keep his armature status so they used his initials on the decal instead of his name. The bike was original and I disassembled and greased it. The front brake was something I added so I could...

Stripped bottom bracket threads -solutions please

You can try red Loctite. If it doesn’t hold or if you want to remove it a propane torch will usually free the loctite. Personally, I’d try JB Weld reinforced epoxy, if it’s unavailable in the UK, then order it on Amazon. It’s the strongest glue for most applications except plastic, and it’s...
