Thanks for that. So same "L" used in different years", but still no idea as to its meaning. I can see that John's bike appears to be 531 db frame/fork, but not an "SL"/"Pro" tubeset so the "L" might relate more to geometry/model regardless tubeset. Frame obviously uses different lugs, tubing...

rBoTM RBotM December 2023 - OPEN Month - all welcome - Enter Now!!!!

Just adding to the mix with humble submission since those other bikes are great. An old (poor) photo of bike and new photo of crankset; I need to take and put a few new photos on thread (https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1930ish-automoto.440543/) as I amass more parts to make this an Automoto...

@Boston49r I neglected to ask if you knew what the "L" in the serial number signified. Thanks!

Thanks again folks for all of the information and memories! I am glad that I found this frame and also renewed some interest in your local cycling lore/history. At this point with the knowledge I have gleaned, I plan to conservatively restore keeping original livery, but getting areas of rust...

I sent an email (address was listed on their FB page) to Clarion CC (Notts), but no reply after one week. I'll try again in another week and then just let it rest and go with the info I have already. My biggest obstacle at this point is getting decals for the frame. Even though it is in very...

@3wheeler7 Thank you for the continued info. At least we know Mick was present at the shop during 1984 and it supports the fact that the business was open until circa 1986. Another comment: (BigT @ CyclingUK; from July 2009) "A GOOD CYCLE SHOP in the NEWARK / NOTTINGHAM or LINCOLNSHIRE: All of...

This website is about as close I get to interacting online relating to "social" media. I will try kicking the cobwebs off my f-book account and see if I can remain calm and collected while dealing with the f-book foolishness. In the meantime I received a response from another local and his...

I tried multiple times on different devices to email Clarion, but their mail function is not working and I saw no email address to use for a direct email not using their "contact us" option. Edit: tried again "Could not start mail function" is the message that appears after typing my message...

Here is a comment from another Lloyd's bike shop patron (TrevA at CyclingUK forum) : "Henry Lloyd’s was my local bike shop, on Meadow Road, in Netherfield, Notts. I seem to remember someone saying Henry set up his business in the late 1950’s (way before my time, I was born in 1959). For most of...

I talked with the seller prior to buying the road frame. He was not really familiar with the bikes/frames. Interesting how he had the only 2 Henry Lloyd bikes I've been able to find online as examples of the marque. Decal, of course, could be a replacement for whatever reason. I did not look...

I just received the frame (got home 2am USA eastern); no damage! Wow, this frame is noticeably lighter than a Columbus "SL" frame of similar size (or maybe I am convincing myself of it). I do not have (that I know of) any 753 or 531 Pro frames, to compare with. I do have a Columbus lugged "EL"...

Thank you for that info. I will try and reach out to Francis and see if he can help if he's available. The rear drop-out may be an indicator as to the earliest it could be. Not sure what model that Shimano d-o is (maybe "UF"?). Did Lloyd ever build frames, or was he just a shop owner?

Online searching provides nothing. Not sure when the Reynolds "Special Lightweight" tube set was superseded by the "Professional" tube set; but I have seen (per owner) frames made with "Pro" tubes from 1980. So I would put this frame at circa 1979 at the latest if the "Special Lightweight" was...

Thank you for that info. Would you have any idea as to the year when operations changed hands? Was Henry still in ownership/partnership, or retired from the business. I am just trying to ascertain if Henry could have built this frame himself. I have no idea as to his age at the time this frame...

I did buy it, but not from ebay. Seller and myself haggled privately and kept ebay's profits to ourselves (seller anyways!). Thanks for info and appreciation!
