Bike of The Month Mar 2014 - Nominations!

Because that worked so well with the Brodies in January?

1982 Salsa Scoboni #5 "Restoration" *Final Photos Page 11*

Re: 1982 Salsa Scoboni #6 Build Restoration I agree with both of the (heavily excerpted) quotes above... although certainly not with the overall points being made in their original versions. It's interesting to look at where the various advice is coming from. And the types of bikes owned and...

1989 Merlin Titanium ... Dual Roller Cam Time!!

Hmmm... well, the mount does look similar to the ones that use smooth posts (i.e., no wedge washers, etc.). Maybe someone with more experience on the particular Suntours you've got can chime in. (I've got a few RC's, but none are Suntours ) In general, if it's a bike you intend to...

1989 Merlin Titanium ... Dual Roller Cam Time!!

You should stick with whatever type of pads (threaded or non-threaded) that Suntour supplied. Doing anything else is stupid/dangerous. My pad advice- Good pads: Modern KoolStop Vintage correct pads: Old KoolStop or Suntour Good vintage correct pads: WTB (non-threaded only) or Mathauser

1989 Merlin Titanium ... Dual Roller Cam Time!!

Get or make a wider cam. And/or look for brake pads with a longer post. Or a wider rim.

    PotM February - Suffering

Blood on the workbench. A mechanic and shop-owner friend of mine was working on prepping a bike for the NAHBS bike show. I’d brought the beer and was hanging out on the shop's couch. All the sudden YEOUCH!!!… and we have a big chunk of finger sliced open thanks to a disc brake. Still life of...

    BoTM Ideas Themes or Suggestions

I suspect that those suggesting the ₤700 Special month have in their mind low-to-mid end 90's bikes? I see that and think early 80's. With the US$/UK₤ exchange rate at that time (>2:1), many of the ultra-rare handmade US bikes of that era would qualify. Seriously, I continue to think there...

BIKE OF THE YEAR 2013 **VOTE NOW**

Fat, Koski, Ibis. Maybe in that order. Or Koski, Fat, Ibis.

Most powerful brakes for Summer riding

I think you mean WIDTH. By my measurements of a few samples, disc brake pads are about 14mm wide whereas rim brake pads are about 8mm. But then, if you're focused only on the pad, there's also LENGTH. Again, from a few samples I measure about 29mm for disc pads and rim pads ranging from 57 to...

    show us your trials bike

2 x 24". Although honestly haven't really ridden either much. One is (literally) a wall-hanger and the other is on semi-permanent loan to a friend's teenage boys who love it.

    WTB roller cam brakes

Those are actually the most common (relatively speaking) of the WTB variants.

Care to share/expound on the math you're basing that on?

the unofficially cool MTB drop bar thread

Tubing is too large a diameter and the bend isn't sharp enough (if you like the look of the originals); and the hole for the star nut access is scary and ugly. For a bike with 1-1/8" steerer and threadless, I much prefer this:

when is a Chris King headset not a Chris King headset....

Re: when is a Chris King headset not a Chris King headset... Maybe that a new, current-production, high-end item is being offered at less than half suggested retail price (including free shipping half way around the world)?

Bike of The Month December 2013 - Vote Now

Four super nice bikes to my eyes this month: One-Off, Zinn, Yeti and Merlingoose. As is too often the case in BoTM though, even two of those have "pedal issues". Do people REALLY ride single-sided clip/strap pedals without clips/straps? Kudos to lewisphoto for doing clip/strap pedals right!

    steve banks bike collection sale?

1979 is wrong. That's either a typo or figment of the owner's (or seller's) imagination. 1988 ±6 months.

    BoTM Ideas Themes or Suggestions

Nothing wrong IMHO with the "seasonal" theme, but let me suggest maybe what was missing in this month's initial "setup" vs. October/Halloween: - The Halloween instructions encouraged specific types of BIKES to be entered: *Frankenbike / restored, *Monster Fat, *You own the Wolfman Klein - This...

BoTM November 2013 - VOTE NOW

That's why it's a poll. We'll know on Sunday. People enter pretty generic, mass-produced bikes in BoTM all the time... So it seems odd to ask this question about a clearly unique, handmade bike by one of the iconic builders. So the fact that people know of a bike or that the pictures aren't...
