Knowledge dropped! Thanks @retrobate and everyone else. I thought that it was sleeved like that C57 part but my frame has cracked right through rather than just the sleeve separating.
Your build thread is inspiring @prezza and makes me want to save mine, I'll have another look at it in daylight...
I think I'll do that @coomber at least to satisfy my curiosity - it seems too regular to be a radial crack (?) but if it's separated there, how was it originally joined?

I thought this was a good basis for a restoration - neglected but saveable. The slicks, adjustable stem, and big gel saddle seemed to suggest a bike that had led an easy life. Here it is after cleaning and de-dorkification:

The dangers of idly browsing eBay: I was looking for something more modern but this NOS Seven was irresistible. Needs better wheels / tyres as it came with a (presumably non original) Alex rimmed wheelset and anonymous but heavy rubber.
