"Isn't modern bicycle technology absolutely wonderful?"😍

Absolutely. Quiet, less chain slap (and wear on components), better shifting on rough terrain and when combined with a narrow/wide ring most riders can get away without any form of chain device. I remember using some of the proto SRAM X01 11spd stuff with it and it felt like witchcraft, and even...

    Suspension forks, your views/experience please

Manitous from that era were in my experience were better made, stiffer like for like, had a much better damper and were generally a higher quality product. However, both are now impossible to get things like wiper seals for so I'd choose based on condition (inside and out). If the Mars is a...

What Retrobike "feature" do you avoid when looking for bikes?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, and some of the stuff here is hilarious. Bar ends? Even though we spent years fitting them and then slagging off risers, wide bars etc etc, and Maguras, which worked ten times better than V-brakes or cantis ever did? I'm guessing my dad's bike...

    1995 Trek 950

Yup, that's still the 'best' MTB to me @bikeworkshop . No nonsense, just freedom in the hills and getting up close to wildlife. Less people back then too, which was nice. I'm in the middle of rebuilding that Cannondale and have pretty much finished restoring the Trek too. Did you manage to...

"Isn't modern bicycle technology absolutely wonderful?"😍

Modern bikes are great, but like so many things in modern life they can also feel like they offer too much molly-coddling. Old bikes are great for nostalgia and something different that doesn't feel like it's doing all the work for you but they're definitely not as competent, nor reliable. The...

    1995 Trek 950

Yep, lycra is great when you're exerting yourself, less so when stationary! When we started out it was tracky bottoms to start with, and then we gradually moved over to the likes of lycra, or ronhills along with some of the early Endura stuff. Looking at that pic again and some googling I'm...

    1995 Trek 950

That pic's awesome. Proper kit with the woolly jumper too! Is that Glen Affric? It looks familiar but at the same time I can't quite place it.

Wanted Hope front hub (Bulb/Sport) 36h

Thanks @bhill22, unfortunately I need more wheels like a hole in the head, hence the rather specific request for a single hub. I did have one in my basket on eBay that I then forgot about, and when I did remember it had sold. I've got a pair of 36h slightly worn 521 CD rims that I have a rear...

Wanted Hope front hub (Bulb/Sport) 36h

It's the older style of hub with a removable spider for mounting discs to, pre 6-bolt style. I'll find a pic and add it. The Sport uses the same five arm style as the front and rear Ti Glide's while the front Bulb was proprietary to clear the 20mm axle.

What's your favourite part or component to buy?

Suspension shims! Or at least it was in the past when it was easier to rebuild shocks and forks with shims rather than needing lots of custom tools and pressurisation. Nothing changes how well a bike rides than setting suspension up properly using shims rather than adjusters.

Are all of the orange Manitou forks 'Mango'?

Hmm, X-Vert Supers were much later and possibly are different - all the stuff that was the same era as the Trek Y matches each other though. I just googled for a quick pic of the X Vert Super as I didn't realise they did them in orange and the first pic looks a shade darker to me, but another...

Are all of the orange Manitou forks 'Mango'?

Yes, I've got some '98 SX-R and X-Vert R, as well as some '99 X-Vert R lowers and they're all the same colour. I can only imagine the Magnum would be the same as their magnesium lowers (as opposed to Carbon ones) seemed to be one of three colours, and all the same shade; silver, red or mango. HTH.

Wanted Hope front hub (Bulb/Sport) 36h

As title really, I'm after a front Hope hub with spider in 36h. Either a mk1 Bulb or Sport would be ideal, but QR and 36h are the main criteria. Black preferably but that's easily fixed if not. Cheers

Match for the weird pewter / bronze for Retro Kona front ends.

That's very different! And while it's probably just lighting, I think it's perhaps a little darker than the Halfords blend I've used recently. That said, we're talking fractionally rather than the gulf you're showing in that pic. For the fork Fiat Marrone Volcanico might be close (oh how I miss...

What handlebar grips were popular, early to mid 00s?

ODI Ruffian, Yeti, Intense or Race Face Lock Ons IMO. There were likely many others but those were the only ones I really used in that era.

Match for the weird pewter / bronze for Retro Kona front ends.

Depending on how quickly you want to do this I could probably do you a spray out card so you can see how close it is? I picked up a can for some 888 lowers (I previously refinished a set of Subaru wheels in it using P4U aerosols), although it's only Halfords this time so nothing fancy, but I've...

Match for the weird pewter / bronze for Retro Kona front ends.

Ahh, fair enough, is that the almost nickel looking one? Dakota grey is a lot closer to a silvery bronze than grey IMO, especially if put down over white or silver base.

Match for the weird pewter / bronze for Retro Kona front ends.

I know you've said that you've got a few ideas, and I am not an expert as I've not got the P2's in front of me, but Audi Dakota Grey looks pretty close to me for this if it's the version of the fork I'm thinking of. .

    Collection Contents

For me it's mostly my old bikes; I'm not a collector as such, more an 'I shouldn't have sold that (or broken that)-or'. The only two exceptions to that philosophy are my Trek 950 which is my long distance going-into-the-mountains bike, and built up around the era of the bikes I rode in the same...
