so old MTB frame to gravel bikes? thoughts? update on 30/06/24

The problem I have with drop bars on a mountain bike frame is, it's not funny. Ape hangers on a touring motorcycle, that there's funny. Classic. "Aerodynamic!" "Well at least his pits are dry!" Apes are kind of funny on a 26er frame but then you stop and think, "Hey, that kinda works, maybe...

Yeah that fork will work. Great price for cromo. Should give ya some nice sharp steering.

    Looking for fork help/advice.

Be mindful of your axle-to-crown length ("AC length"). At some point they started "correcting" the bikes geometry to allow for suspension forks ... it's not totally clear to me that they were doing that during the era of 60mm suspension forks so you're probably going to be shopping for...

    i just wanted ask . . . is it me? or . . .

There was a theory, for a while there, that humans could progress past the concept of ultimate truth, that we could find our own truth perhaps. Believing this requires that we disregard at least 4000 years of written history suggesting that there is no progress past that point, only regression...

    U brake klein

Interesting. Serial number R038B ... Rascal didn't come out until '90, no? ETA aha found several Pinnacles on the iinternet with "R" serial numbers. Dang I might need that thing

U brake klein Interesting. Kind of expensive but you don't come across either that frame or fork all that often, it seems

    Sugino VT vs super mighty

Found an old nishiki catalog that says the VTs are cast; nothing to scream about either way. The Maxy's are quite a bit lighter and look cool imo. That ARX rd doesn't quite have the capacity but long as I don't cross chain it, it's fine. May put my Mountech rd on there but, it works as is, so...

Bikes I've never owned....but thought I might like to!

Good call, although you'll be Jonesing for some fillet brazing before too long. Me, I'd say P-21/22 team, if I live long enough. Already have the parts for it, just need a frame.

    Sugino VT vs super mighty

Picked up this mixte the other day for cheap ... Thinking probably an '85 Sport. Was thinking about slapping my super maxy 50.4 bcd cranks on there just for giggles. But I'm looking at those Sugino VTs on there... they can't be *that* nice, cheap bike and all. But they sure look nice. Haven't...

What polisher do you all use?

Detail (ie 2-inch) polishers are expensive, aren't they? Just yesterday found a good deal on a Ryobi combination sander/polisher, factory refurb. Haven't tried it out yet but I imagine it'll work better than my hand drill. Worth keeping any eye out for if you want to save some money

Suntour XC Pro Hubs…am I getting into trouble here?

Check the Ebay vendor pb*bikes ("Vintage NOS Bicycle Parts") -- he has a bunch of NOS cassettes. They are expensive but he takes offers, I feel like I got a good deal on the one I bought over the summer. I figure, it nets out, because the hubs don't seem to fetch much of a price even for NOS...

    Campy hub ID

Found these on eBay and snatched them up quick but Campys product line makes my head spin. Since I want to lace em up to some NOS Morox rims, my fantasy is, this is part of their '91-'93 MTB product line. 135mm OLD, freehub is about 35mm with equal width splines. Gonna lace em up anyway cuz...

    1983 Kuwahara: restore or mod?

Interesting. Should be do-able, question then becomes how to re-finish, and at what cost. Doesn't bode well for the reno budget eh. I see spray-dot-bike in this frame's future :D

    1983 Kuwahara: restore or mod?

It's a flip either way. Too tall for me and have plenty of bikes in rotation. It's in a million pieces already, here's the frame. Not perfect, worst of it is that lower head tube lug. Not sure if that's just corrosion or if it took a hit. If it did, the thing is a frickin tank; not sure...
