Those cranks have a sort of textured, bright anodized finish. Maybe vapour blasted first before anodizing.

I/we tend to plan routes on Strava. Usually double check anything spurious or unclassified on Google earth to make sure it will work. If I want to speed up the process, Komoot is good for looking at a map area & suggesting existing routes which worked great for us in the Alps this summer...

Did these get any lighter over the years? I remember the iconic Orange coloured 91 era model Outpost weighing an absolute tonne. If it were me I would strip the paint & go all artistic with my own splatter paint effort. GT's should have bonkers paint finishes & that would certainly be therapy...

Replace, they are not serviceable. You should be able to source a replacement from a similar hub of that era. I remember when mine went on a DX hub back in the day, it stuck open & nearly caused me quite an injury on my way to school one morning.

I have Yamaha CD player, amp & B&W (301?) speakers. Quite a nice sound but it's missing something. It may be the amp as I used to love the sound of these speakers with an old Aiwa amp. Or is it my ears?

Because you added (no doubt) extra chain to allow for the larger outer chainring. The fact of the matter is, whilst the limits can be exceeded slightly outside of Shimano's recommendations, this has it's limitations.

There seems to be a number of these black 91 Lava Domes on here & some selling platforms of late. They do look good & are very worthy of a few upgrades or just some love to keep them going another 30 years. Keep us posted!
