Full suspension retro-bikes - are they worth it.

Horst Link Turner Burners date from the late 90s too, still a capable bike :)

BoTM September 2013 - The Poll

Two Slingshots? Wasn't expecting that :) Kuwahara has a certain something. I vote, erm. A bike of some sort. Hm.

Full suspension retro-bikes - are they worth it.

My 1998 Santa Cruz Heckler is my only FS bike. I've ridden lots of modern stuff, and yes, they're mostly "better" in various ways, but not better enough to justify the cost. Also it's had exactly one set of replacement swingarm bearings in 15 years -- FS bikes don't get much lower maintainence...

    Free School Meals

There are proven educational benefits to having well-fed pupils. The argument would be: Better-educated pupils = more capable workforce = country gets better at doing stuff = better economy = everyone benefits. Although obviously if the motivation was to improve education there are...

Sub 4 lb Steel Frame (Sunn)

Serial number will be build date, not model year date -- a frame made in '96 is likely to be a "1997" bike.

    the ''enrgy' drinks industry

I believe that most of that falls into the "urban legend" category, but I'm completely with you on the last sentence :)

Gear Acquisition Syndrome: Do You Really Need All That?

Someone somewhere has to keep coming up with new stuff for people to buy, though. Dunno. I find it hard to get particularly worked up about how other people spend their money.

    Impertinent question

Oh, and you probably won't need more than one courgette plant. Maybe two if you're a massive courgette fan*. * Massive fan, not a fan of massive courgettes. If you're into massive courgettes, try marrows.

    Impertinent question

+1 for growing stuff. Wouldn't bother with spuds, though -- they take masses of space to grow and they're cheap to buy.

How many bikes in your house?

    15, including wife's and kids'. I think.

Wtd: Marzocchi (or other low pressure) shock pump

Despite having ludicrous numbers of shock pumps, they're all 300psi ones -- sorry!

What's the best retro looking new tyre?

The width is a bit of a limitation, although they're not massive by 2.35in standards. I wasn't actually expecting them to fit in the Cannondale (which isn't noted for big tyre clearance) but they do, albeit quite snugly ;)

What's the best retro looking new tyre?

I like the Halo Choir Master R -- not just skinwall, but a suitably old-school square-block tread too :)

I've got a few, I'll have a look. How low is low?

    Mt Snowden advice please

Dunno. Llanberis seems like walker pinball at the best of times. Might as well just do a Llanberis out-and-back if you want to come down that way -- it's an easier climb as well. Rangers is quite adventurous in places, I'll grant you :) Snowdon by MikeDavis, on Flickr

    Mt Snowden advice please

Up Llanberis path (1/2-2/3 rideable). Down Rangers, but not all the way. Push up to Bwlch Maesgwm, descend back to Llanberis.

Aye, Beast of the East from the same year. Nice :)

    Camper Van Beethovering

We've got a high-top T4 camper, which is ace, but starting to feel a bit small. Been looking at Movanos/Transits/etc with a view to a DIY conversion. Are the Ivecos that much bigger? An actual 6ft across would be great -- can you still get that with insulation/lining? Not sure I'd actually want...

drivetrain retro/modern equivalents and diminishing returns

    1991 Cannondale SM700 - ridden at OWMTBC

Yes :) Good traditional square-block tread, too -- remind me of old 2.2 Hardpacks a bit. Wasn't sure they'd actually fit in the frame (they're 2.35s) but they do, just ;)
