How does one choose a new steed in these modern times?

Reading through the first couple of pages of the thread, thinking Spa Cycles would be well worth a look. Steel frames, short and long top tube lengths available, good range of options for tyre widths and brakes, bike and frame only possibilities. Then saw @Takingabreak had the very same thought.

    Spa Cycles Audax

Yes, pretty much the ultimate for compatibility. As long as the tyres aren't too wide, so many components fit and look right.

    Spa Cycles Audax

Nice! Is that the one that was on for £75 with carbon forks? An absolute bargain if so. I've swapped the bars on mine to butterfly bars. Not everyone's cup of tea, visually, but I've found I prefer them for most types of riding. Look forward to seeing pictures of yours as it comes together.

    Claude Butler Vantage Resto Mod

Specialized is a great choice. That one looks in good condition. I've got a Hardrock and a Rockhopper and like them both a lot Some of the catalogues are here: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/archive/categories/specialized-catalogues.6/ The U brake points towards it being from 1988, I think.

Help Me, I am being dumb

This is a good question. Chain width not matching sprocket spacing, and/or shifter mismatched to cassette can lead to skipping across gears.

All good suggestions. When I've had these issues it's often cable tension being out.

    It's a 58cm. I'm very happy with it.

    Spa Cycles Audax

Hmmm. Nearly a year. And in that time a few changes. I found an unused Sora BB, double chainset and derailleurs on eBay and decided to swap them in for a wider gear range. And then decided to rebuild the wheels with mainly double-butted spokes, 36 front and rear (with plain gauge on the...

Carrying bags on front of bike advice sought

+1 for a lowrider rack. I like panniers front and back. Heavy, dense things in front, bigger lighter things behind, balances the weight and gives spare capacity for food, drinks etc.

    R J Quinn - Fixed Gear Audax

R J Quinn was a shop on Edge Lane in Liverpool. It's still there though with a slightly different name. My dad, from Liverpool, had an R J Quinn-framed road bike with very nice lugs and wrap over seat stays. There's a little about it here: https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?t=23399...

    1991 Shogun resto project

Looks like a great frame and project. I've always liked the look of Shogun bikes but never had one. This thread inspired me to look into the history and frame number info available online. Sharing in case useful to anyone: "Shogun serial # database? - Bike Forums"...
