Aah, I see. My question was more out of interest than questioning any authenticity. I know pretty much nothing about Kona but am starting to hanker after an Explosif - that's how I ended up at this thread.
Personally I think all RBers are a bit 'speshull'. I was talking to somebody at work about my collection of bikes and I might as well have been admitting to pidgeon fancying or train spotting the way they looked at me.

Seriously though, there is absolutely no problem at all putting modern parts on an old frame. Some of the most successful small companies out there today (Paul Components for one) are almost admired as a way of mixing old and new.
