All going wrong - rear mech attachment Q

Re: Hmm, thanks for that. Does it not require the smaller unthreaded French hanger hole though?

All going wrong - rear mech attachment Q

Re: I'm off to sort that out now... but I'm beginning to think I'm trying to fit a 1990s quart into a 1980s pint pot. Or vice versa.

All going wrong - rear mech attachment Q

Don't understand - I don't want one with a claw, that's the point. I have a mech with a claw that I didn't realise was the wrong thing till the last couple of days. http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... p;t=334888 So being unable to date it I was trying to kit it out as something pre...

All going wrong - rear mech attachment Q

I thought I had a 1978 Peugeot. Then I thought I had a 1988 Peugeot. Now I'm not so sure it's a Peugeot at all. When i got it none of the components matched. It had a 90s Dura Ace rear mech installed so think the hanger might have been tapped at a later stage... I've just sold the DA mech in...

All going wrong - rear mech attachment Q

Re: All the ones I've found of those brands are either attached with an adapter claw (like I got duh) or are designed to work with the unthreaded hanger. Although I just read that Huret made some for the threaded version (Campag?). Does anyone know of specific models (not just Huret) that...

All going wrong - rear mech attachment Q

I repeatedly buy the wrong thing (tears of frustration here  ) Can somebody tell me what early 80s French mechs could screw into a gear hanger instead of being bolted on from the other side?

    Are claws easy to remove?

Re: Excuse me while I resurrect this thread... I have a Simplex rear mech with the adapter claw that I was planning on removing for the same reason, but read in a thread on a different (hence less trustworthy  ) forum that you shouldn't take them off. And it looks like the diameter of...

Which of these component compromises is least wrong?

Those mechs aren't for standard brazed on bracket sadly. A proprietary Simplex design I believe, where they effectively attach to a hole in the seat tube rather than a bracket.

Question for the Vitus 979 gurus! Fork steerer size?

Your non-original fork isn't in 531 tubing by any chance?

Which of these component compromises is least wrong?

A Friday boredom post. I have two dilemmas re choosing some replacement parts for my Peugeot, and wonder what the most acceptable approach is. Given I can't date it properly I'm vaguely trying to kit it out with 1980-1985 clobber. Want as clear a conscience as possible for L'Eroica if ever get...

    Dating Cinelli (or other) handlebars?

Hmm, thanks for that. And, re shim, I presume you'll also advise not to try and squeeze a 26.4 bar into a 26 stem. Might have to mix and match my cockpit brands :(

    Dating Cinelli (or other) handlebars?

I'm looking for some handlebars c. 1978-85 but don't know how to judge if ones that come up on eBay merely labelled "vintage" are of the right period. I am mostly looking at the Giro d'Italia and Campione del Mondo models but that's only because I have a Cinelli stem. Currently I'm just looking...

    Loosening Mafac brakes

I fear so :( Thank you for everyone's contribution though. I guess this whole vintage project malarkey is about learning stuff as much as actually doing stuff...!
