Big/big is not a good choice of gearing. It might be possible with a 6spd system but unnecessary IMO. If the largest cog is bigger than 28t on that freewheel then you will ultimatly sporten the life of the drivetrain. Nuff said, it's up to the guy paying from here. Just don't say I didn't tell you😃.

If you add links to the chain then the cage won't take up the slack. The chain is supposed to create tension on the cage and the rear mech's spring. Poor chain tension results in inferior gear changing. Correct chain length, correct cage length and correct cable tension gives responsive...

It looks good. I just wonder if the rear mech has the capacity to take on the cassette/freewheel in combination with a 42t chainring? It looks like that mech will have to put up with a lot of hard work when you want to use the largest sprocket. Maybe you should consider a medium cage rear mech...

What is an average cross country ride? I had a 38t chainring on a 1X Mtb but after 2 rides i gave in/ up and promptly ordered a 32t which was much more accomadating for the type of terrain that is in my "backyard". I was just trying to be tough when i put the 38t on, thinking a 32t was for wimps...

Of course i need another bike, I can't possibly go for a ride in the woods on a dutch shopper in lycra, even if i put spd's on it.

1× drivetrains are meant to be used for riding mostly uphill in woodland, on muddy trails. A do it all bike does not exist, it's a consumers pipe dream. A 1× with 11-52 & 32 chainwheel on an mtb isn't the perfect set up for a long ride on the highways and byways of the world.

Most of the people that are members of this forum are experienced cyclists. Some of the people i come into contact with through my job, are not. I have the almost constant honour of trying to educate people how to utilise a 3× system. At other times, I have the honour of explaining to customers...

1× has possibly replaced 3× because 3× offers an unnecessary number of gear ratios for the kind of terrain ridden on an mtb.

Some and possibly alot, of people find managing 21-27 gears too much for their cognative capacity. I personally don't have a problem with that but having to choose 1 or 2 gears instead of possibly 6 and still making the wrong choice, is much easier and quicker. 3× is dead and now unnecessary. The running costs of 1× set ups are expensive but very suitable for Mtb's. 2× is most suitable for gravel bikes, specially 2×10, regarding running costs and variation of gear ratios. That's my P.O.V. anyway and everybody elses wallet.

Now i've taken it down from the loft and subjected it to daylight in order to take a photo of the rear end, as requested by Mickyspinn. While i had some flow on the go, I mocked the frame up with a pair of carbon forks.
