    Just bought a Carlton Giro

Hmm well it is not too bad rust wise. Wheel bearings all good, bottom bearing has a little play, horrible freewheel on it gear wise 15-24 6 speed changed it to an 11-28 7 speed which made it very close on the dropouts but just fits. Seat post was way too short and bizarrely too small. I ordered...

    Just bought a Carlton Giro

I had my Corsa given to me for my birthday when I was 12. I had come out of Church in the spring and wandered into a thicket next to the Church and found a gorgeous blue Carlton 10 speed. I took it to the police and on day 27 it was claimed by the poor bloke from Wickford who had had it stolen...

Good point. When I restore cars I just think respray the whole thing. I had that done with the Corsa. I would like to keep this original but with the rust arrested with a converter so I like your thoughts.

I have been debating with myself the best way of cleaning the surface rust from the paintwork. I think WD 40 and then aluminium foil will be first then maybe some white vinegar to convert the remaining rust. Is there a better way?

I think as a place to live the UK is about as good as it gets. Even when it is bad here it is a lot better than most other places. I know I am biased but I do think being English and living in the UK is still a very fortunate thing to be.

    Just bought a Carlton Giro

It occurred to me was calling this model a Giro a mere shortening of Giro D'Italia or a reflection on the rising UK unemployment in 1977?

I have a Lepper padded leather saddle but I quite like the Lepper Tourer saddle though which is similar to a Brooks 17. As my surname is Lepper it does seem I am fated to use Lepper saddles. I hadn't realised it had chrome rims originally but the campagnolo ones this one is wearing are quite...

    Just bought a Carlton Giro

This was a nice bike in its day. However the wheels are especially nice I thought Campagnolo Lambda Strada V profile. It is a bit of a missing link in my Carlton collection. I have the Corsa from the early 70's the new Giro from 1977/78 and my Super Course mk 2 from 1980. That gives a Carlton in...

    Carlton Corsa 102.5 mile ride

The only thing I would now say is definitely wear a helmet preferably a good one.

    Carlton Corsa 102.5 mile ride

The same for the rider really bruising a big bang to the head and a busted rib but otherwise OK. Oh and the rear reflector broke on the bike so that needs replacing.

    Carlton Corsa 102.5 mile ride

Amazingly I had pulled all the anchors and the bike had stopped on a dime. I had exited straight on. Somehow it had landed on the pedal and bent the pedal which had largely come apart. I have now bent it all back to shape and it is fine. It had scratched the brake lever that it landed on and...

    Carlton Corsa 102.5 mile ride

Thanks I am pretty much back head wise. When I woke up I kept asking the same questions, what happened? I suppose the bike is f*****? My shoulder hurts oh I seem to have bitten my lip..... What happened? I suppose the bike is .... For about 3 hours. I eventually became aware again in a bed in...

    Carlton Corsa 102.5 mile ride

Just been ambushed by a car at a junction that pulled out in front of me then stopped when they right across the road. I was travelling at a good pace. I could not stop me although the bike did stop just about. I was unconscious for a while and went to hospital for a couple of days. I am bruised...

Tyres and and things that go hiss.

Agreed everyone would say the marathons would have more protection than the delta cruisers which I had on for 7 or actually it might have been 9 years with 0 punctures riding about a 1000 miles a year. The marathon was just plain unlucky and met the flintvwith its name on it. The bike originally...

I have a normal route that I did for many years, about 50 miles and visiting 32 churches. I would agree Churches were a key focal point for the local community which saw them embody the community's history. The memorials, art, architecture and decoration all reflect that history and even current...

I would also rather have my cenelli cork bar tape lovely stuff to hold all day.

I have to say the bike is still surprisingly good it is the rider that is not so brilliant 😁

    Carlton Corsa 102.5 mile ride

As I happen to have the surname Lepper there was really only one saddle I could have! My Carlton is definitely not original. It originally had short mudguards and it was 5 speed and had I think Huret rear mech which had rather natty red pulley wheels. It had steel wheels and it had sat in a shed...

Once I got to the Royal Tiger Rettendon and got outside another pint of cola followed by a pint, followed by food I was looking a bit more cheerful, still in the same shirt and tie though!
