When I originally bought it in NZ years ago it came with Rockshox 21 forks and the original Kona threaded headset and stem but the forks finally gave up the ghost and all the running gear was worn out so stripped it to only the frame and bought it back to Sydney to be resurrected using new and...
Thought I'll fit a pair of Kona Curve cantilever brakes on the rear of the Kilauea to see how they go. Abit fiddly but once you have the spring tensioned in the right way it's good to go. Definitely only made to slow you down and not a complete stop like the V brakes. Heard alot of comments in...
Re: One for the Lawwill lovers - Schwinn rebuild with twist
Very nice bike. Great that you managed to merge old school with new. BTR have had good words about their gear in the DH mags. :D
Don't know if the bloke actually rides his contraptions - why would you want to position the end of the stanchion tubes of a triple clamp DH fork at the bottom clamp. You do a big jump and you will DIE!!!!
I don't have any scales to weigh them but they reckon the more modern standard Stab Supreme is around 43lbs or 19.5 kilos. The older bike is at least 2-3 kilos heavier. The monster forks alone weighs around 5kg (!!!) same as the frame. Fitting the narrower 2.3 profile Tioga tires on the older...
Replaced the xtr 952 rear derailleur with a rapid rise 951 version. Took it for test ride on the local tracks and all good except need to adjust screws so it can engage biggest cog. The Monsters I reckon are better than the 888 marzocchis I have on my more modern DHer.
92 sounds right for the age of the bike. I imported a Comp CST from the States to New Zealand when decent mtbs cost heaps. Tubing was Tange Prestige for this one and Shimano DX components all round. Need to restore it to it former glory at Christmas time.
Put up some pics when you are finished. There's plenty of budget priced BMX parts out there. I sourced parts for my build mostly on the internet from USA, UK and locally in Oz and was cheaper than buying a fully built BMX brand model!
Relating to breaking stanchions on RST forks and I can vouch it did happen back in the day. It happened to my favourite bike shop owner in New Zealand on his twin crown RST shod Scott Octane bike. His face was pretty scarred up after his forks snapped on a trail. He wasn't happy and sore as hell.
Here's a oldie 1990's Intense Uzzi bike with some good retro gear on it, Mr T's, Magura hydro rim brakes Roo X cranks etc advertised in Oz Gumtree.
