Clip vs pedal spacer - any ideas?

    That's a great idea, thanks!

Clip vs pedal spacer - any ideas?

So having found I can't actually get away with M clips for L feet, I need to revisit my pedal configuration. The problem is that these particular pedals, despite being unremarkable Lyotard mass-produced (and heavy), need a wider than usual mount, and such clips are a tad thin on the ground...

    Arguably finished!

After a bit longer ride last night I found my medium toe clips aren't long enough and I'm pedalling on my toes (which appeared to annoy my knees somewhat). So frustratingly not quite there yet. Not used friction shifters before - interesting how they make me approach gears in a completely...

    Arguably finished!

    a. It's been a long and painful process, but for the first time I've just successfully ridden my "restored" 1982 Peugeot PKN10 without the chain falling off, the wheel getting stuck in the chain stays, gears not engaging, gears not shifting at all etc etc etc. A mighty 1.6 miles! Many thanks to...

How do I reassemble a hub?

I was about to say thanks for such a comprehensive answer, but now I'm concerned you're trying to sabotage my road bike!

How do I reassemble a hub?

For reasons we shan't go into I have in pieces a rear hub (for a freewheel)... 1x spindle, 2x lock nuts, 2x keyed washers, 2x cone nuts (I think that's the right term, not really sure what a cone nut is). The cone nuts are different sizes. I don't know what order the bits should go back on the...

    Correct accoutrements for 1982?

I'm fixing up a 1982 Peugeot PKN10. What sort of frame pump would be right? Were they fitted with one as a matter of course (as per brochure) or did you buy your own? I'm also mulling on whether I should worry about an authentic looking bottle. If I do, what are the options?

Basic (but Simplex) rear mech incompetence

Aha, that's made it look lots healthier, thank you very much all, will put the chain back on later and see what's what. But I'm very confused, as said tab is using the notch on the dropout which I thought Simplex didn't use it, plus you'll note from the exploded diagram above that the tab (part...

Basic (but Simplex) rear mech incompetence

I've taken some more pics to illustrate my bother... From the top, with the arrow showing in which direction the spring presses the assembly. From the side And pulling it down a tad to show where the Simplex proprietary tab stop thingy is. I very much appreciate the help, chaps.

Basic (but Simplex) rear mech incompetence

How terrifying is a strip and rebuild? Do you think that exploded illustration on its own is adequate instruction for the novice? Having taken it apart, how does one adjust the tension on the spring? I don't see the front plate as a separate part on the diagram (so I reckon a decal error too).

Basic (but Simplex) rear mech incompetence

Hmm - I thought it was just that someone had put the sticker on upside down. Looking at some diagrams online I see that there are two holes where the end of the top spring can go in the pivot bolt... I don't know if it's on the wrong one and if that would make a difference.

So is it the case that mech should swing lower like a chariot? Thanks for the advice, I'll take it off and investigate

Basic (but Simplex) rear mech incompetence

Just remember there's no such thing as a stupid question. I've never done any installation or fettling of gears so am flying blind, but what's going on here? This is a new chain of precisely same length as old but the original ran through a Shimano 600 rear mech which has been swapped for a...

Anyone near Amersham with a 2-prong Suntour freewheel tool?

Re: @rse. So have just found the block spins nicely in both directions. Perhaps another LBS visit is wisest course of action :(

Re: Re: Ooo might try that - no, not ridden it, and remembered to grease the thread before putting it on. Thanks for the suggestion!
