What guidelines for qualification as retro/vintage

Ah, I see. And that bottom one really is superb. But I wish those Eroica chaps would allow pre 87 clipless pedals...

What guidelines for qualification as retro/vintage

Saying aluminium, titanium and lugged carbon qualify is fine, but how they qualify is what I'm interested in. Bearing in mind you're contributing to Retrobike.com you must consider your bike somehow old-fashioned :) I originally was trying to find the oldest nice bike I could afford that was...

Chiltern Festival - am I the only one confused?

I will feed this all back to the organisers. I suspect having 2 a year is a bit overwhelming re organisation, but it's a shame as I couldn't get to the Chenies one last year and don't know what it or the routes from it were like.

When you can't afford retro shoes...

Re: Re: Oo, thanks for the offer. I imagine Sidi a tad narrow but might check them out (away for half term, will get back to you on return. Also means I have to cry off the 5th). But surely velcro is WAY too modern...

When you can't afford retro shoes...

It's what Monsieur Simplex put on the things. No doubt they were a bit more forgiving for the French market...

When you can't afford retro shoes...

While that makes sense, my problem is that when faced with a lowest gearing of 21/45 the likelihood of me needing to unstrap on a climb is quite high :)

When you can't afford retro shoes...

You've sown a little seed of hope that it's not. With this macho block I'll never get up it.

When you can't afford retro shoes...

And I can attest to this, it's one of the reasons I'm grumbling to myself about this whole shoe/pedal/strap malarkey and struggling on climbs. @bigfatron, my usual poison is a 45 in Specialized (they seem to be wider) and thanks for the offer, but it's not worth going mad re shoes when they'll...

-- Cheap old stuff, derailleurs, shifters and wheels --

I have a braze-on Huret front mech you can have for £5 plus postage (prob £2.80).

What guidelines for qualification as retro/vintage

I'm interested in how "new" you think a bike or component can be before considering it too modern to be classified as worthy of a retro ride. E.g. These Eroica folks say older than 1987, and must have downtube shifters, toe clips, and exposed brake cables. However clipless peds came in c. 1984...

When you can't afford retro shoes...

They all look too modern (like walking boots, or have velcro). I need plain black lacy-uppy ones.

When you can't afford retro shoes...

So my first extended ride with toe clips and straps. Had the right strap reasonably tight and the left a bit looser for emergencies and ease of entry at roundabouts etc (didn't help any though). Out of the saddle on a climb and my left foot slipped out, which kippered things a bit as I couldn't...

Clip vs pedal spacer - any ideas?

@midlife, ooooh no it has to be Lyotard for authenticity. Even though they weigh a ton :( For a quick fix I used some rubber sink washers from Wickes... which are a tad inelegant but low key enough to get by with. Did my first proper ride with clips n straps last weekend. Horrible, faffing...

The nature of Peugeot 531 tubing

I briefly owned a very nice Peugeot 531 frame that was of indeterminate model and age but I roughly guess early 90s. It was what I hoped of that metal in weight, surprisingly light. However I ended up swapping it for a 1982 Pug of the same material that is distinctly heavier. A bit...

Chiltern Cycling Fest - July 17, particularly retro-friendly

Throw me a line here, M-Power, I can't find the reference to British Classic-ness on the website and want to report back to the organisers if it's misleading. Either way, I can assure you there's no snootiness on the matter and let's face it, if you deliberately read the "rules" as "1989 or...

Chiltern Cycling Fest - July 17, particularly retro-friendly

Oo, they had a retro mtb thing last year. But don't get yr UK-specific spec thingy, altho despite my constant offers the organisers still ignore my proofreading requests. The truth of the matter is the retro "spirit" is the main criterion of retro rides, so riding a bike that looks pre 1989 is...

Chiltern Cycling Fest - July 17, particularly retro-friendly

My whole "vintage" project and participation in this website was inspired by some glorious bikes at last year's http://www.chilterncyclingfestival.com/ near Amersham. I think it would be of particular interest to us forummers as although it features "normal" sportives and hill climbs and things...
