    Work bikes

Tried with a local specialist welder and the ti was evidently so thin/brittle that it just made it worse. Only option would be to put a new rear end on. Evidently a weakness of older ti frame design not to reinforce at the point of high stress and chain strike. Shame as the old Sandvik/TST...

This has been my trusty steed for about 8 years traversing SW London. Awesome ride and would have been my forever commuter until I discovered a hairline crack in the drive side stay recently. Gutted!

90s GT - seat post sizing issues

My ‘91 Avalanche is 27mm so sounds like they might have increased the size between the two years.

    Wanted Decent Steel Frame

Looking for something for 26” wheels in circa 19” size with 1 1/8 headset and suitable for disc brake. Preferably a decent steel (853, Prestige, True Temper etc) and decent condition as I’d like to get up and running rather than a project. Anyone got anything that might fit the bill? Thanks

Wanted Hard tail frame circa 2000ish

My trusty old Sandvik era Cove hummer developed a hairline crack on the chainstay and it’s not repairable so sadly it’s having to be retired to the garage wall. I’ve now got a bike’s worth of parts ready for an early 2000s build (disc brakes rather than V) and I’m wondering if anyone has a half...

    Titanium Repair?

I was giving my trusty old Sandvik era cove hummer a clean up this afternoon (it’s my daily commuter) and was alarmed to see what looks like a hairline crack on the outside of the drive side chainstay, opposite the bridge near the bottom bracket. I’ve taken a few photos and studied as best I...

    GT Avalanche ‘91

Thanks for all the positive comments! I really enjoyed the youthful nostalgia that this project brought back and it certainly whetted the appetite for taking on something similar again. As is often the way though, life gets in the way and arrival of a little ‘un recently has meant that I’ve...

    GT Avalanche ‘91

After many distractions I finally got round to getting the Avalanche towards completion this weekend. Still need to source some new bolts for various corroded originals, but a strip down and clean of the drivetrain brought it back to former glory and a clean, touch up and polish of the frame...

    GT Avalanche ‘91

Managed to escape to the garage for a bit of fettling this eve. Started a deep clean and polish up of the components and hardware and quickly realised this was going to take a while. Also noticed that Shimano used to be quite shy with stainless bolts so will need to source some new ones for a...

    GT Avalanche ‘91

Thanks for the comments guys, really enjoying the project can’t wait to actually give it a go when finished. It’s amazing the difference in size and geometry to current bikes. I recall back in the day carrying my ‘95 GT Tequesta up Helvelyn with a mate, over striding edge and then biking down...

    GT Avalanche ‘91

Next stop - the wheels. Stripped down the cassette, gave a good scrub and it has come up like new with practically no wear. Hubs are also nice and smooth with no play, and a good clean and polish of the gunmetal Ritchey rims has brought them up a treat. I deliberated on the tyres for a while...

    GT Avalanche ‘91

Started out giving the frame a once over to see the condition of the paint or any lurking rust but they must have painted these GT’s very well as its held up remarkably for a 30 year old bike. Will need the odd touch up here and there but overall very pleased. Interesting to have a play with...
