What highly rated products did the bike media convince you to buy, only to not live up to the review?

Back in the day I would buy all the bike mags and lust over the shiny new parts. So when I assembled my first bike I only got parts that were rated 4 cogs or more. Unfortunately not all these parts lived up to their high ratings and were actually pretty rubbish. RaceFace System stem - a 3...

What mountain bikes did you own BITD?

All years approximate 1993 British Eagle Boss - In a glorious pearlescent red. It got stolen. 1994 Giant GSR100 - In a very nice turquoise/blue colour and loved the Shimano EZ Fire shifters. I actually miss this bike 1998 Sunn XCircuit Max - This was stolen and really miss it, I would like to...

    Frames

These are the ones I've weighed and will include hangers where applicable. All years are approximate. I think the first 3 are very good for frames designed for more aggressive riding. 1999 Sintesi Snake - 1724g 1998 Arrow DSS - 1814g 1997 Curtis RaceLite24 Prototype - 2041g 2001 Curtis SuperX...

    The new 26” Cruiser/BMX thread

Not strictly a bmx, but with some bmx bars and lower height forks it pretty much would be. It's a Curtis RaceLite24. This is a prototype frame that was built for their factory rider Chris Jackson. It'll be going in for fresh powder coat and stickers soon.

State of the industry: a running thread

I can see the benefit of electric but I'm a bit apprehensive adopting it. The bike industry seems to have a really short support cycle, meaning your 8 year old £450 rear mech is garbage as the battery is dead and the manufacturer doesn't make them any more. I also question the sustainability...

Why do you collect retro bikes?

I've noticed that. They really aren't complimentary towards older bikes, apparently the geo was rubbish, suspension rubbish, brakes rubbish and drivetrain was rubbish. And when they test them they don't set them up properly for the rider. Jordan Boostmaster seems to be doing a good job flying...

Why do you collect retro bikes?

Just wondering what drives everyone to collect the retro bikes that they do? Are they from a particular era, frame material, discipline, nostalgia or you like a bit of everything I like dirt jump/4x/DS bikes from the late nineties and early noughties. At this time there was a lot of exciting...

    For Sale Rockshox Tora 318

Locked out rigid. A quick Google search tells me "The ‘All Travel’ system means you can choose between 80/100mm and 130mm travel just by switching internal spacers". Don't know if it's true though.

State of the industry: a running thread

Don't think it drifted too far. It's all about struggling companies. I stuck to new and second hand apollo's and pendleton for my kids. Kids bikes are only used for a few years the second hand market is flooded with near mint bikes for about £50 so was a good way to save a few pennies. Now...

State of the industry: a running thread

Very interesting thread. On Isla bikes. I'm not surprised they maybe struggling. They're very expensive for what they are and aimed at middle class families that are too good for Halfords but know nothing about bikes. The parts used are at the lower end of the market, even unbranded, but the...

In extremely good cosmetic condition. Only thing letting them down is the lockout can't be disengaged, could be something simple but I'm not familiar with Rockshox internals. 20cm steertube. £40 £30 posted mainland, Highlands and other areas maybe slightly more. Collection welcome from near...

For Sale Marzocchi DJ3 2008, basically brand new never used

Bought these years ago to go on a jump bike but never used, and never will be so best give someone else the opportunity. They are close to immaculate with only a couple of blemishes, they even have the protective plastic covering the stickers. 26cm uncut steer tube, star nut has never been...

What teenage me wanted to build........and now I'm on the look out for parts

Just found a notebook from about 2002 with some scribblings of my dream bike build together with the prices. This was going to be my ultimate jump/street bike and I still want to build it after all this time so on the look out for the parts. I was going for 24" at the time and could decide to...

Show us your little 24” or 20” wheel bike

Thanks you. I've been on the hunt for a DS-3 so I can have a matching pair but they're impossible to find. Good 24" tyres are hard to find, which I find surprising as premium kids bikes still need decent tyres. Best thing to do for the Moto's is to buy 2nd hand wheels with them already fitted.
