    Bike identification

It is quite interesting, indeed. Perhaps a randonneuse frameset re-built with drillium parts for CX as suggested above? Should make an excellent project. Frame quite lightweight (what is it? a 55?) so probably a good type of vitus pipe.

Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

On the topic of French frames, here's an interesting looking Frenchie. What on Earth has happened to the seat tube?! Is it even safe to ride like this...

Uh OH! Hole in Chainstay (93/94 Dave Yates Diabolo)

I'd clean up, ensure there's no further damage and wrap some carbon fibre around it. But I have the cf tow & laminating epoxy readily available + some skill to use it. Cf means you don't need to respray the frame, and it will reinforce the rest of the [potentially rusty] stay. You're saying...

Well, this is becoming a tradition now - got wrong washers sent to me. Not even close to the spec of the ones I've ordered. WTF.

    Junk bike challenge 2023

Just had a wee peek with a £40 filter on ebay and gumtree, just out of interest (& excitement). Within a 50 mile radius, there's half a dozen horrible bso jobbies and one old gaspiper that actually resembles a bicycle, but it's a mixte and in the wrong size for me. 🤪 Wouldn't want to do a...

    Junk bike challenge 2023

It would be fun, but has to be in summer (breakdowns = long walk to the car, so long daylight and warm evenings essential). £40 easily buys a hybrid or a bso, but for a good road bike £40 won't be enough...Will have to look for a freebie and hope it's a good fit.

    Junk bike challenge 2023

Road, offroad or gravel? How long a route? We should also break this down into geographic areas. E.g. Folks from Inverness won't be heading over to St Austell, even if the tea, cakes and bike chat are really good there. Also, basic consumables like tyres, tubes, chains, cables, etc shall not...

    Wanted Cranks/Crankset 165mm 110bcd

I have square taper silver XD2 170mm cranks, but nds still has a pedal attached to it. Taking the pedal off the axle, chucking the axle in a vice and pulling the Dickens out of it might help liberate it. If not, I hope you like cleated Shimmy pedals!

Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

With a bit of luck I'll have my threadless-ready home-made stainless nuts by the end of next week, but if not, a French nut should allow me to try the EC30 solution. Alternatively, a spare top cup & nut, as I already have a working Tange bottom cup and a workable neco bottom cup. A pal bought...

“this rare item won’t last at this low price!!”

What is it anyway? A dropper post switch mount? Or an engagement ring for a bike enthusiast?

Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

@Woz you still have that pug headset in a jam jar as a fallback option? 🤪 The Tange is a strange one, as it's extremely tight on an ISO steerer (but obviously an ISO job), and it's tight enough on a French steerer to make you think it was French until you hit a pothole. The campy ISO threads...

Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

@velomaniac If only it was that easy pal. If you've missed 2-3 pages of French headset discussions, the essence is: - French crowns are either 27.0 (ISO), 26.4 (Same as JIS) or 26.5 (for practical purposes, same as JIS). - Steerer is 25.0 instead of 25.4 but it's irrelevant for threaded headsets...

Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

Is there anything more painful for a bike wrencher than installing full guards? The answer is "yes" - trying to make a French headset work! Good news: Narrow-wide chainring delivered from China in 10 days! Wow. Don't always get that even when the sender is in the UK. I've swapped the XD2s for...

Retro-modern fusion gravel build madness. The new Superb!

I'm a bit daft when it comes to bars. I really like my Giant XR Connects with a light 5deg flare. Have them on my summer racer and the Bojack. Any other drop bars feel like a compromise. I've briefly tried several retro bars and they just didn't work for me. Other modern bars are not as good...

That makes one of us. Mrs's comment today, while looking at the bikes: "Can you tell me why exactly do you need two identical bicycles?" 🤔
