My brother had one. It worked in a straight line, more or less, but if you turned a corner, it was a nightmare. No matter how much you cranked up the preload on the shock, the front wheel was just all over the place.

I don't think I've seen the type 2 you've described. I bought a set of the type 1 off ebay, and tried to use them on an XTR M965 wheel but they didn't work. The rotor sat too far outboard of the wheel, and it was impossible to get the caliper to line up. I'm pretty sure the issue was the odd...

That last piece - CARBON FIBER S/T UPGADE KIT - I think that's a reinforcement for the steerer tube on certain Manitou models. I had X-Vert Super on a Specialized Enduro, and I remember getting a plug just like that (it was a safety thing) and I had to jam it in the steerer tube. Looking back...

Awesome. I always liked these. I used to live with a guy that had one - it broke at the dropout. I think they were (partly anyway) wiped out by a strike at the aluminum smelters that supplied them.
