    FALCON 753 BANANA TEAM FRAME

Not at all. In 1983/84 the Falcon team bikes were actually built by Paul Washington at Brian Rourke's. In late 1984, 1985 and 1986 the team bikes were built by Terry Dolan (formerly of Harry Quinn, later of Cougar and later again Dolan Cycles). I have a 1984 Falcon, built with Reynolds 531...

The make of the hubs is not specified but Maillard is quite likely. Maillard hubs have the date of manufacture engraved on the outside of the barrel, using a dating system of the form NN NN. The first pair of numbers is the week of the year, 01-52. The second two numbers are the year of...

The beautiful SR drilled chainset was fitted to this model as standard. I am attaching a copy of the 1980 catalogue entry (frame is pearl green) and the 1982 catalogue (frame is clear blue) which has a description of the spec. Both pictures show this chainwheel.

I am sure that is a Professional with the CRMO tubing and the Bocama lugs. I think the frame is identical to the SuperPro except the latter has a chrome fork. Catalogues show that the Professional was made first in 1978 through to 1982. Yours is an earlier one as it has the rear brake cable...

The CRMO of about that date would probably be a Professional - a similar frame to the SuperPro but with no chrome forks and no Campag drivetrain, brakes and seat post. Generally were light blue metallic,

That's a nice early 1980s Falcon by the look of it. New wheels and other upgrades but in keeping with the original spec. Usually pretty affordable too.

    Mystery frame ID help

I don't think you will get better confirmation that it's a Mercian than from the firm themselves. Congratulations! Now for the interesting, and often lengthy and expensive, search for period parts! Great fun though.

    Mystery frame ID help

A great decision! Keeping the frame and the fork together was essential and now a quality refurb. What colour scheme are you going for?

    Can you identify this frame?

I have also noticed that the Reynolds transfer has the gold base which only was added in 1973. It suggests a respray in the 1970s?

    Can you identify this frame?

My 1957 Falcon has the same small cable stop on the left hand side of the down tube. It took me ages to find a Cyclo Benelux derailleur with the little bracket that holds the end of the outer cable. It was a four-speed x 2 derailleur.

    Can you identify this frame?

Superb! The lugs are the same as my 1957 Falcon Club Special.

    Identify earlyish lugs

Falcon used the classic low relief metal badges from its inception in 1956 through until about 1978/79 when Elswick Hopper bought out Ernie Clements ownership of Falcon Cycles and made him a director of EH. The new regime implemented cost savings in all areas to compete with the fierce...

    Identify earlyish lugs

Oh well spotted! Clearly the lugs were a pretty regular component on lower spec Falcon bikes through the 70s. It was a clever way to shift a lot of basic bikes riding on the cachet of the reputation of the pro racing team and of the top end bikes. In logging all the various models there were...

    Identify earlyish lugs

I am not sure what you mean by the olympic rings era. They were used as early as 1956/57 as per the attached photo. I have this badge on a very early Club Special Falcon. Note how the manufacturer is shown as "RCI Ltd". Robert Cycle Industries were bought out by Coventry Eagle in 1958, so...

    Identify earlyish lugs

On looking at my database, the same lugs are used on most of the 1970s Black Diamonds. Those were very prolific in numbers and were a non-531 tubing frame. This frame had been resprayed and the rivets you can see in the photo, I guess would have been put in after that. So, it might not be its...

    Identify earlyish lugs

Thanks Midlife, you have noted my preferences! I edited the photos as the head tube has an unusual badge, which I am attaching, which gives away the manufacturer. It is a metal badge, which suggests it is at least pre 1978 / pre Elswick Hopper takeover, when they seem to have switched to the...

    Identify earlyish lugs

Thanks for that. I suspect they may be a copy as they are not brilliantly machined.
