    Ernie Clements

EC left Elswick-Falcon in June 1982 and was making bikes under the Coventry Eagle and other names out of the Newown factory in Wales. This continued until December 1989 when his business (again) went bust and then he traded from his bike shop in Ledbury until 2006. It was in this latter period...

Falcon San Remo. 60s . Colour Unknown.

Here is a picture from the 1960 catalogue and also the advert from January 1960, when the bike was announced. They show how it was finished in the factory. Note that the font on the down tube is not the one in LLoyd's catalogue. Throughout the 1960s they used the type shown here. Also, the...

Beautiful! Is it 1963? It looks like it with the round tubed wrap around seat cluster detail and chromed head lugs. If so, the decals are the 1970s type. In 1963 the Falcon name would be letters on the frame paint background, in a different font. The white band was later.

How about a photo of your San Remo? I have a 1972, a 1981 and a 1983. I would be good to compare.

    Falcon bike additional information

I am pretty sure it is December 1979. M shows the frame was made by Miki in Japan, 9 is the year number and M is the month (12th letter of the alphabet, missing out I). If the factory type foil head badge is original (and it is the original type, not the Lloyds replacement type), It will be...

Falcon San Remo. 60s . Colour Unknown.

In the 1960s the copper finish was one of the more popular colours for the higher level Falcons. This is the copper colour on my 1960 Super Route frame. Note the different font for "Falcon" on the down tube. This lasted until 1961.

Falcon San Remo. 60s . Colour Unknown.

It looks as if the rear triangle and the head tube lugs are chromed. Is that the case? If it is, then because it has the round wrap-around set cluster rather than the flattened version (as in my title picture) then it would almost certainly be a model 80 San Remo (announced January 1960). It...

    Tyre size

I find my Vittoria Corsa Control Graphene 2.0 700 x 25 to be amazingly puncture resistant. Over 10k kilometres without punctures.

    Falcon competitor 531c bike information

I've just spotted this post. The Competitor was in the 1986 catalogue and the diagonal rainbow stripes are confined to the mid 80s. Its a sound bike with a quality frame.

1963 Falcon San Remo - finally finished and I quite like it!

I missed this post when it came out. Great work on the Falcon. It is the model 80 if I am not mistaken, which is actually the model which launched the San Remo model range in January 1960 and began it all - the first record of the Equipe I have is 1962. A lovely ride so welcome to the small...

This sounds like the beginning of a very satisfactory project. I look forward to later developments. Does the frame need a respray?

I look forward to seeing some progress on this new acquisition. Have you got access to the V-CC library to check it against old Viking catalogues?

And how is the super pro customised? I have a 1979 model which I love riding and its entirely original. I wonder what you have done to change yours.

    Catalogue 1978 Falcon Catalogue

Falcon made a range of bikes for all price levels. The marketing strategy was to do well with their top of the range bikes used by their Pro Racing Team. On the strength of the team's racing success, which was good, they sold their bikes as having "a racing pedigree". To meet the lower end of...

    Cotton bar tape question

I remember at school in the 1960s we used to put multiple wraps of cotton tape so the bars became really thick and cushiony, apparently just like the pros (or so I was told). Does anyone else remember that technique?
