1983 Raleigh Gran Sport (at last!)

I discovered pro bike racing in 1982 as a 12 year old - my first cycling magazine was the Cyclist monthly Tour de France issue of that year. Back then the most accessible bikes to lust after were Raleighs as the brochures were easily obtained, in my case from Stowes of Slough. £225 in 1983 was...

Dave Russell Complete bike Price drop 270 Pounds posted

Re: Dave Russell Handbuilt UK racing bike - PRICE DROP !! I nevr did buy a whole Russell frame - 2 friends did however. The nearest I got was a respray of my first `lightweight' frame - a Peugeot Routier 501. Dave made some 531 forks for it after the Peugeot efforts snapped.... I also had him...

    Dating Colnago frame

Well here's a period brochure shot of the Super frame. I assume your frame is a Super, with those chrome lugs (although other members may have better knowledge). Mexico's had the indented tubes, Arabesque's the fancy lugs. The original easy spec? I think your colour scheme is that of Freddy...

    Dating Colnago frame

Hi - I almost had a bid on this one myself! Early 80s. Assuming the forks are original, I'd have this as an '82. According the the Colnago dating information available elsewhere (Ithink my copy came from the Classic Rendezvous forum), the stamped chainstays arrived circa '82 and that was the...

Dave Russell Complete bike Price drop 270 Pounds posted

Re: Dave Russell Handbuilt UK racing bike - PRICE DROP !! Nice looking frame, sadly too small for me. I was a customer of Dave's in the '80s and he was a kind guy - always wanting to help young riders (as I was back then!). A little more here: http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/bu ...

    identifying Old pros bikes.

Good thread. I always wondered who made those ANC Peugeots - truly beautiful bikes from an era of beautiful bikes. Stedlocks - Stonehenge cycles in Salisbury may have a sister bike to your Gazelle. I didn't get to see it but apparently it was ex Dag Otto Lauritzen. The Raleigh Gran Sport...

    Rim options please

Mavic stood for high quality in the 1980s with clinchers (G40, MA40) and tubs GP4, GL330, GEL280, CX18, SSC. GP4s were known as the clubman's racer - not too heavy, pretty robust - if you turned up to a local race you'd see them everywhere. I rode GL330s which were seen as similar quality, but...

    Courier services

Mmmm. I was let down by Parcel Force this week. Booked online, waited in all day for the collection (too big to drop off at the Post Office apparently). No one turned up despite the email confirming collection by 2pm. Phone around 3pm - `It's definitely going to be collected today'. Phoned at...

    Colnago Owners..

Just spotted the `Colnago' Gran Sport that was for sale in the complete bikes section. It caught my eye as: 1) It's was apparently a Colnago 2) It's the same colour scheme as mine with the 70's graphics set 3) 3 brake cable guides on the top tube - like mine. Clearly the bike for sale was...

    Anyone tried DIY Drillium?

Search online for the interresting article `The Drill-Out Craze' by Bill Robertson. If you can't find it, I'll dig it out and post it. In the meantime - I've just received some new drillium levers (on the right!) to replace some that were just too extreme, but still in use by the top Italian...

Wheel choice for an 80's Colnago Mexico build - Help needed

Red labels are good up to the very late 80s. Colnagos would generally have been supplied with Ambrosio rims. The best of these being Metamorphosis, but Montreal, Nemesis are aslo well rated. I think there even some Colnago branded rims available on ebay right now.

Anyone have experiences with Campagnolo Freewheels (7/6 sp)

I've got a few 6 speeds (red stripe), with one in regular use. Personally, unless you're a fanatic, my advice would be to stick with steel. They can wear very quickly and I seem to spend way to long looking for replacement DE-18 sprockets. I find it heart breaking to ride them - every...

    Tubular Tyres Are Go!

All, Just for the record I run tubs on my old bikes - 7 of them I think, and love them. I personally find tape difficult to work with and prefer glue. Check out the 2 most recent editions of the Bike Shop Show podcast for a discussion re applying tubulars - interesting stuff...
