Re: I like Campagnolo chains, they seem to be noticeably longer lasting than the Shimano and SRAM chains I've had. 9 speed chains work just fine on 7, 8 and of course 9 speed cassettes; I'm not sure about 6 speed, I haven't had anything 6 speed since the 80s. Not cheap though.

Re: I had a go with some cleaning stuff and both the saddle and the grips have come up nice and clean. I don't think the bike has been used much and was mainly just a bit dusty from wherever it was stored.

Re: If the battery is good, maybe it's the controller. It's probably the most complicated component, so perhaps the most likely source of the fault.

Re: I've got a tub of this that I bought many years ago for assembling car brake callipers: I now keep it with my bike tools and slap it on everything, seatposts, handlebar stems, bolt threads, bottom brackets. Never had anything sieze yet.

I don't think so, the battery is in the cross bar, so there's at least space in it for that.
