Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Re: Re: I'm making up for my misspent youth when I did all sorts of cruel things to innocent bikes. "Bodged together gravel bike?" - I prefer correction of a historical anomaly. :) BTW I'm old enough to know the good reason you line up the makers name with the valve hole - although it is not...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Rear hub arrived today. Much jubilation and drooling over Sturmey-Archer art. :) There's not many 130mm OLD flip/flop hubs on the market, so I was pleased to get this. Built it up tonight, so that's both wheels ready. Bike build tomorrow.

    And today I did......

Re: Re: I'll give you one. I rode it from Jamie's to JoG. (Sounds epic but not that far really). What I noticed about it was - it is a bike! Not some unwieldy contraption. I was prepared to make allowances for it, but none necessary. The only place I noticed its heft was trying to U-turn in...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Front wheel built. Looks nice and shiny with all the polished alloy - the way a bike wheel should look, none of this black spoke, black rim and hub rubbish. I'd forgotten what fun putting a lot of tension into a single wall alloy rim could be, but it all worked out nicely. Then I stripped it...

UCI world champs DH - Brutal.

Watched the women. It was more of a lottery than a race IMO, although the winner was clearly the best on the day. Tracey Hannah was gutted.

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Re: Re: I did think about doing that, but then I realised it's only to allow another couple of mm of tyre width and there's already over 60mm, so I'll leave that idea alone for now. A friend kindly gave me a nice shiny 36 hole Campag hub for the front wheel, but I'm going to give it back. I...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Borrowed a back wheel with the slightly wider Weinmann concave rims. I like them because they're pretty. :) (Ignore the horrible geary hub, I'll be putting something nicer on it) The rim looks good but not enough clearance with the Super Moto tyre. Its 60mm blows out to 65mm at 25psi on that...

Nice 1" P7 nickel frame 21" XL Scotland

That would make a lovely gravel bike. It may be XL for a MTB, but it's more medium in gravelly size...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Still mucking around. Tried the wheels out of my 1x1 with drum brakes. Like the look of it, but the rim width takes the tyre out too far and there's no rear clearance. The 1x1 no doubt breathes a sigh of relief because it's going to get its wheels back. Looks like I'm stuck with using the...

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

This hasn't been forgotten, been fat-arsing around trial fitting various bits. Boxes and boxes of V-brakes and cantis and what did I do? Decided the bike deserves brand new cantis. My cowardly riding style necessitates good brakes so I've ordered new Tektro CR720s (because they are the least...

Re: Re: We did cross a road... :) But luckily it was very narrow, so we weren't on it long enough to get contaminated with skinnytyreism or worse Campagnology.

My birthday ride. Not quite what it was supposed to be, but seeing as car sharing isn't allowed at the moment and it's wasteful to drive 2 cars that far for a short ride, we stayed local to me. I told Jamie it was a road ride. That's why I took my long distance audax roadbike. After about 2...

Looks like we managed to get in nearly as much climb as the Bealach na Bah, so the original idea got honoured. :)

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Re: Re: Depends on the rod guides. If they have holes, a PITA, if they are slotted, dead easy.

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

If I take it somewhere for a ride it has to be partially dismantled to fit in the car boot. Luckily I don't have to worry about flats too much. I appear to have a large stock of 20" tubes... :)

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Trial fit Magura dropbar hydros I could make it work, but getting a wheel in or out without deflating the tyre would be a hassle. I don't like hassles. I wonder should I make it rodbrakes... :)

Gravel Bike? Humbug! , Scotland needs proper ATTB's...

That looks like it will revolutionise the 1980s Jimo. :) It's a tourer, so probably to carry spare derailleurs... :) I'm looking forward to seeing this.

Gravel bike? Humbug, Scotland needs proper All Terrain bikes

Trial fit with narrow rim at front. Plenty clearance. Looks like that's the size to go for front and rear. Wheels look better with shiny alloy rims anyway. Meanwhile after further excavation, I found I had a pair of 40mm lightweight rims plus a Sun Ringle Big Mammoth Fat, but I think I'll...
