Dawes Super Galaxy.....new to me, I love it

Yes post some pics when you can, I have given up on the canti brakes, they never seem very good to me and fitted some V brakes (old style with the blocks on a post) and they are a massive improvement, the bike came with some top mounted cyclo cross style repeater levers which I like so they will...

    Today's Ride

My take on a gravel bike, a Giant Escape that I paid £150 for with drop levers and top mounted cyclo cross type levers and front suspension forks with lockout....works for me :) although on this ride I had the wrong tyres, I generally use 700x38C square section For me advantages over a trendy...

Gravel bike packing, its all done wrong IMO

I agree, I was responding to the suggestion by bagpuss that Gravel bikes were the new touring bike, they are not, they dont make particularly good touring bikes (you can do it but my Dawes Super galaxy is a better fit), they can be used for some types of light touring granted, but for hauling a...

Not very retro, but circa 2005 ????? used buy

Picked up this Raleigh Pioneer Venture for £60 and it rides really nicely, the schwalbe tyres are worth the price paid alone, probably put flat bars on as I find standard 42cm drops way to narrow and I have some flat bars, V brakes, changers and a stem to hand, anyhow, its an aluminium frame...

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

Thats a good one, yes they do look a little bit Star Trek dont they :)

Gravel bike packing, its all done wrong IMO

But they arent as good at being touring bikes as more traditional designs, more expensive and more hassle to maintain (expensive 1x transmission, integrated cables inside the frame), not as good at carrying big loads (no mounting points for carriers) and not as repairable in far away places...

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

My 8sp drop brake SORA shifter has just failed and so I am using a bar end shifter to tide me over, its not a SORA by any chance is it ?

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

I must admit I hadn't considered that possibility but £14 is crazy cheap so you may well be correct, they seem good at the moment, time will tell

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

The previous set of 3x7 shifters originally from a 2002 Halfords Carrera Crossfire are still going strong after heavy use, so I have faith, even entry level Shimano gear lasts well

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

LOL, they actually work really well BUT if you buy a Di2 electronic groupset for £1600 you can see what gear you are in on your phone :-) BARGAIN :)

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

Yes, quite possibly, I will stick with the functional cheaper stuff, I am a cheapskate :-)

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

I like your explanation, I have used a set of 3x7 shifters for 15 years and they still work fine, they have proved super durable, even the entry level Shimano kit is good quality, I cant see why drop bar shifters would cost any more to produce than flat bar, basically the sports market comprises...

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

Well I bought these for £13.96 delivered, whats the difference ?, these work great

Why can I buy 3x8 brake shifters for flat bars for £14 but.............................

Shimano 3x8 rapidfire brake shifters that last for years £14 (just bought some) and yet the same thing for drop bars is £100 or even more, technically no more to them so why is that ??

Gravel bike packing, its all done wrong IMO

Thats a good idea, I think I have learned a few things over the years about keeping the costs down and what is just nonsense and hype, and I love my bikes so yea, I will do that
