1996 GT LTS Thermoplast - Will I ever...

So this'll be the first version to go down my usual route in anger. What I plan on swapping asap is the seat and post, the rear rim (or a different set of wheels entirely), the tyres?, pedals. And of course the brakes. They will hopefully be Syncros, Flite, Mavic or Spinergy. Not sure about the...

1996 GT LTS Thermoplast - Will I ever...

Today I went and finised version 0.8 of the bike. Thats for doing the first few rides. I'll change a few parts later. Putting in the internally routed cables sure is a massive pain. The cable management seems like an afterthought. Especially the two cables above the top pivot. You have to route...

New parts day. A pair of RaceKings 2.2 with inner tubes, a new cassette. The wheelset for the first try will be this. ChrisKing ratchet for the rear and Hügi up front. The rims are a bit of a mismatch for now. That'll have to change at some point. Just realized I don't have any spare Flites...

Over the weekend, I mounted the XTR crank to the frame and came to the realization that I really really don't like the looks. So change of plans. RaceFace it will be.

1996 GT LTS Thermoplast - Will I ever...

Parts menu on the table. While I wait for a few new parts to arrive, I'm looking forward to cleaning this mess. Not sure about the cranks. They've seen a lot in their life. Should I try and paint them? Or maybe go for a different set entirely? I think, I'll use these for a bit and decide later.

Heeeeelp! Deore LX parallelogram v-brake problem...

You do realize that you have to put those pointy springrods behind the hooks on the brake arms? :D

I read the instructions again, now I know. That neutral shaft has a thin ring engraved on one end. It can be seen in the next pic. For 80mm travel, it should point downwards. So it was not configured correctly by the last guy who had this fork. The fork is now back together, but I'll have to...

So. Let's get to it. First order of now relaxed business: Hack rear suspension. I really don't like the Rock Shox deluxe shocks. But to find a better shock that is as short as those - 145mm iirc - nearly impossible. But I do have a 165mm SID rear shock. Maybe I can make that work? Seems...

1996 GT LTS Thermoplast - Will I ever...

... finish this one? I bought that frame waaay back. Should have been around 2004 or 5. I don't remember exactly. I was still a student, earned my first money as an administrator at the university. Those were my first steps into been a "responsible" adult. I hadn't been riding any bikes at that...

Woah! Man! I'd take that frame in a heartbeat! They are so so nice. I Have an LTS-Thermoplast, but I'm still jealous. Here is a link for you. https://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/product-category/gt-parts/page/2/ Take a close look at the bottom bracket area. There is a rubber...

    Dura Ace vs XTR

The rear mechs have different cable pull ratios, too. iirc Dura ace and m900 are basically the same quality, though. DA has the very short cages.

Anyone ever upgrade an old Manitou 26er fork with springs instead of elastomers?

The elastomers just get harder and harder (or slower to compress?) with lower temperature. That's one of the reasons why in cold climate countries winter tires on cars are basically mandatory. It would be interesting to know, if with lower temperatures the elastomers become slower or harder or...

I was planing on going out on a ride yesterday, but the weather just would not let me. Cold and massive rain. I just couldn't make myself to leave the house. But the workbench ist mostly clean, so that's one goal reached, I guess? In the late evening the rain stopped for a bit and I was...

All done. Didn't like the yellow, so I put a piece of inner tube over it. I think, next will be the maiden voyage. No. I need different pedals. IF these come off.

I hope y'all are having a merry christmas. I'm trying to take advantage of the quiet morning while the kids are still unconscious. Crank cleaning ASMR... I don't really like cleaning cranks. But when the parts are finally clean.. it sure is satisfying.

Anyone ever upgrade an old Manitou 26er fork with springs instead of elastomers?

There was an actual scientific test in a bike magazine bitd. They compared the "self dampening" effects of steel springs and Elastomeres. The results were very clear. There was no difference. They basically wrote, that the self dampening effect was just marketing "effort". And with this short...

Now how to cut this? Hm. I have a hammer, so this problem has to be a nail. Yop. That seems totally fine. And to my own surprise, that totally worked. A good result if I dare say so myself. Nice smooth surface. Perfect 90° angle.
