I've got a set of tektro jobbies that go very low, but Frannie is currently wearing them. Deore V-brakes arriving any day now and if I can get them to work, you can have the tektros. They are anodized red though.

That is a stunning kid's bike. I've got mine on cyclocross bikes, and we don't do much off-roading yet, but some kid will be extremely happy with it.

The gear selection process is as follows: - Figure out the lowest gearing you regularly need before it's easier to chuck the bike on your shoulder & run up the hill. - Get the widest rear cassette you're comfortable with. - Your lowest cog's teeth decide the narrow-wide chainring size...

I've had 2 sets of 9-speed Micronew (budget line of Microshift? o_O ) brifters, they worked very well with shimano mech and brakes. One set was on a commuter bike and they've done several thousand miles in all-weather conditions and survived a few acciddents. Never skipped a beat. I prefer them...

Never had SRAM brifters - I wonder if they have a different cable pull 🤔

Just out of interest, what levers are you using? I've done several thousand miles on BB7road and Spyre road and at the best of times they were barely acceptable and significantly worse than rim brakes.
