Well, it's an option, haven't decided yet though, always room for an upgrade. But it's my first bike build from about 6 years ago, so I'd like to try and keep it as near as possible to what it was.

I've read a few forum replies that suggest ANY modern Shimano 9-SPEED downtube shifter will operate an 8-speed 7402 DA Derailleur - is that true?

I think I'll try and put the old DA shifters back on and just use friction mode. Not sure I want to start wrapping tape around the new ones, and finding an original 8 speed DA shifter set seems to be almost impossible.

Haha, I've read this 10 times, and I still can't visualise how the heck that would work. It obviously does work, otherwise you wouldn't suggest it, but I don't understand the mechanics. The insulating tape would have to be about 1mm wide to fit in the groove???

Some different solutions here - insulating tape and j-techs (whatever that is!). I have a lovely Pinarello with a 7400 dura ace groupset, however the shifters recently gave up working properly. Rather than buying some more expensive Dura Ace downtube shifters, I tried to fit some more modern SL-R400 shimano 8 speed shifters. Trouble is, I can't get them to index properly...

I think the organisers let the logistics spiral out of control and it became too big to make work outside of the original base in Bakewell – and now, after leaving they can't get back. Grew too big, too quick.

Haven't been since they moved it away from Bakewell to a field in the middle of nowhere so they could lock everybody into the festival and make it more difficult to go anywhere else but the event base. Will be interesting to see if they've gone back to treating people like adults. I'd love to...

Well, I'm no expert, but I've got a few Orange bikes (P7s, clockwork and C16R) and I'd say that is gorgeous – I'd be happy if I snapped that up at auction for £300 - think others are underestimating it. Love the racing green colour.
