    Top 10 retrobike forum memories

Re: For me the best memories are the people.. especially their help and kindness.. Cherrybomb who karma’d me some STX rings to keep my Lavedome rolling. Mass199 (Mark) to responded my request for a ride by driving all the way to Hopton in the Winter to ride with me, nice day out! Spanky22b who...

Retro looking 10 speed chainsets - your views please

Re: If you want a high quality compact 50/34, square taper, range of arm lengths, classic looking silver finish and quite retroesque design, suitable for 10 speed, then Sugino Mighty Tour. They have matching BB too and super efficient top class customer service when buying direct from Sugino’s...

Some People are just plain nasty ---rant

Re: Geez fella grow up. Stop selling broken junk and stop lying, you are not fooling anyone. It’s pathetic to prostitute your integrity for a few quid. Look up “golden rule” on wikipedia. Participate in society instead of being a parasite on it.

Have you suffered abuse for riding a retro?

Re: Love playing the eccentric! MTB didn’t really exist in Malaysia 15 years ago so virtually no one knows MTBs used to have rim brakes. I get a huge kick showing up on a ‘95 7 speed, cantis, rigid fork. They probably think it’s a ‘hybrid’ with knobblies, those whippersnappers who show...

Retro old bike parts prices on eBay al going though the roof

Re: Cycling became fashionable, retro became cool, eroica etc. For example a while ago i noticed profiteers were buying old Raleigh catalogues (particularly the more interesting ones, lightweights, vintage road race bikes etc) for a fiver then relisting them for insane money, 70 or 80 quid in...

Compact road crank. Any reason why not?

I’m considering putting a new compact (50/34 Sugino Mighty Tour) road chainset on my ‘96 LavaDome for faster road riding. Any reason why i shouldn’t / couldn’t? Sugino’s suggested BB is 110mm which is same as the LavaDome’s. The SRT400 front shifter is the multi click type so by limiting the...

    Gripshift SRT versions?

Re: My experience SRT400: 42mm wide rotating grip, multiple clicks for front derailleur, 7 speed (on ‘96 bike). SRT600: 34mm wide rotating grip, single clicks for front derailleur, 8 speed (on ‘95 bike). So i thought SRT400 was 7 speed and SRT600 8 speed, also my period bike sales catalogues...

    stuff you regret not buying

Re: There was a super clean Kona Sex Too on ebay a while back, still original tyres, immaculate paint, never been off road. That full sus frame isn’t great but that was a 1600 quid bike bitd, titanium bar, o-beam seat post, dripping with XT, Ritchey brakes, good Mavic 237s etc. I missed the...

90s MTB Touring: drop bars or bar ends?

If setting up a rigid ‘90s MTB for a few days touring and up to max 1000km riding, would you just fit some bar ends onto the flat bar to get a variety of hand positions, or go for raised stem with road bike drop bars? Does the latter option really work well at all?

Do you replace worn out rings on chainsets? Or bin the lot?

Re: I virtually renewed a very tired Sugino triple by replacing the middle ring with a new raceface and simply reversing the granny ring, big ring was still very good as the bike had been used mostly off road. It cost peanuts and runs like new. See Cinder Cone in my sig for pics etc. That was...

Misaligned Peugeot 753 frame - opinons

Re: No way it was built like that, such wheel misalignment would never pass the beady eyes of the factory, qc, retailer AND first customer. It’s bent and resprayed.. hmm.. personally i wouldn’t bother with it, there are too many good original frames around to be fixing bent ones, but... if for...

"When did it all start to go down hill for mountain biking?"

Re: Perhaps apps like Strava etc could be used to see / monitor use of xc routes to get an idea of mtb ‘traffic density’ and trends over time (more or less riders clocking xc segments from one year to the next, for example)? Maybe someone could identify a selection of popular segments around...

How much abuse can a Hei-Hei handle

Re: Re: I went through exactly this way of thinking prior to my build, wanting a light and modern performing air fork while maintaining period correct geometry and matched brakes. I realised by looking at other peoples Konas that: a) fitting anything longer than 80mm just looks wrong, the bike...
