The original saddle had not faired well over the last 40 years, not salvageable, I happened across this Brooks Swallow at the local tip shop, it was looking a bit sorry for its self, vey dry and absolutely filthy. A good clean with saddle soap, a nubuk brush for the underside and all treated to...

Also turned my attention to the wheels, wire wool cleaned the corrosion from the spokes, not perfect by any means. Some 2000 grit wet and dry took care of most of the worst pitting on the hubs, then buffed them back to a sheen with a mini polishing wheel and some fine compound. The skewers...

Interestingly or not, the seized seat post bolt turned out to be a 1/4 BSF thread, proper old skool British engineering there. Luckily one of my late Father’s tins of taps revealed and a set of 1/4 BSF taps, so the encapsulated bolt threads have been suitably cleaned and chased out. The local...

The Super Record derailleur and shifter appeared to be coated in some sort of mineral oil which had baked on over the years in the various lofts, underneath they were in excellent condition, just a bit of polishing required.

It came with a pair of Sakae/Ringyo SP-200AL Track pedals with Fides Milano Record Super Light Aluminium toe clips, the toe clips took a bit of research to identify, anyways all cleaned up nicely, bit of patina which I’m inclined to leave be. The well worn toe straps have been rescued with...

A 56T which has been donated to the cause, not quite the 57T, but it will have to do for the time being.

I can’t claim to be overly knowledgeable about 70’s / 80’s Campagnolo kit so again, I would be interested if anyone can shed more light on these, were these typical 1980’s time trial kit? My plan is to sympathetically clean and service all the components maintaining some of its 40+ years of...

Its Wheelset comprises of Super Record hubs and skewers laced to Mavic Championnat Du Monde Sur Route tubular rims. I’ve cleaned up the rear rim and spokes, but not got round to cleaning or servicing the hub. It has a Shimano 600 close ratio freewheel, 13-17t.

It has a Nuovo Record Seat Post, 27.0mm again polished up nicely, not too many zig zags on it. I think it’s a Super Record Strada Crank Set? has a 52 tooth single chain ring. I believe the date code on the cranks is 1979.

I didn’t take a photo of the bike before dismantling it. Surprisingly most things came apart without any dramas, just a seized seat post clamp bolt making a nuisance of its self. Soaking with PB Blaster for a few days and all was well on that front fortunately. Component wise, from what the...

Thanks for the link, very interesting. I hadn’t really studied the Reynolds decals, but you are quite correct Special Lightweight 531.

Time wise, owner mentioned it was custom built for him in 1980, which ties up with the top guide I guess. Couldn’t get much else out of him about it.

I came across this bike a few weeks back, or rather rescued it from being skipped by the owner as part of clearing out his late parents house next door. Once I showed interest, it went from junk for the skip, to having a price tag, albeit an absolute bargain. I wasn’t really sure what it was...
