    Why? Just why?

One of those strange things that almost nobody I knew experienced it. I think had chainsuck on a bike exactly once. It's almost like it was made up to sell more crap.

    BMX, your thoughts?

Suspect vintage BMX is a much bigger market than vintage MTB which might help drive prices up. But yeah, those prices are insane.

    Old rubber

Never had a problem with small cracks in rubber tyres (those would often appear after six months even on new tyres bitd), the failures usually came from the threads on the casing separating causing splits in the side wall.

    Why? Just why?

There will be a reason. It might not make any sense to others, but.... Perhaps someone had a bad experience with a valve stem ripping off, or the aesthetics didn't feel right with only one locking nut. People are bloody weird.

Boulder Defiant Ti with all the suspension

Doesn't look completely insane. Flex stem for trail chatter, fork for big stuff. Probably a similar story on the back. Whether it worked like that is uncertain, but I bet it was something like the thinking process. Someone just wanted to be very comfy.

    Alpinestars Retro Heaven

Remember looking through the window of a bike shop which sold loads of these. Completely out of my price range in my late teens, but marveled at the revolutionary elevated chainstay frames, and of course had totally bought into the all of the magazine hype about the supposed benefits.

Probably one of the few things to survived 🤣

Check out the paint job on this ‘thing’

Yeah, it's not terrible - a small step up from 90s BSO level. I started out on something much worse, and actually rode it in the hills of Snowdonia (although lord knows how I survived).

so i started a bike shop. update 31/07/24

I once got a flat on a Brompton in London and was stuck for time - and remembering how difficult it was to replace a tube on the rear wheel of a Brompton with marathon tyres (40+ mins last time), dropped it off at a bike shop. They charged a tenner. Well worth it, I felt. A few months later, I...

    Engineer V Marketing...

Replacing battery cells is already a thing, and will become increasingly the case. Quite likely, the cells just need rebalancing on this as it doesn't look like its done much riding (likely left a long time in a low charge state). Cheap buy for someone who knows what they are doing.

    Yesterday's street find

Yeah, I'll have a little play with it to see if I can turn it into something more akin to my tastes and if not, hoof it onto someone more deserving. I've replaced the pedals with an old set of XT ones. I dug out a chain from my stash of new ones - and I think that will be the next replacement...

    Yesterday's street find

OK whoever had this before didn't have a scooby doo about setting up gears. Rather than cut the rear inner cable, it is wrapped around the seat stay. And the rear mech cable anchor bolt? It's upside down (the allen key head is on the inside of the mech). I can't imagine someone thought they...

    Yesterday's street find

It was dusty, had flat tyres and the chain was off and rusted into a mangled mess - and was next to a load of other crap that looked like it had come out of a shed. If it was stolen, it was probably a very long time ago...

Is anyone else as sad as me?

When it is in their interests to do so, of course they will. Talking about your Raleigh bike had a certain cachet, your Universal one - not so much.

    Yesterday's street find

Dumped beside some rubbish on the street. Looked a bit sorrier than this when I grabbed it. Bringing it back on the rack of my other bike was a bit of a challenge 🤣 Nota roadbiker but couldn't let a dura ace equipped bike go to the dump.

    Ebay "auction" site

Think it's been that way for a while. You can still score some bargains as it's certainly a buyers market at the moment. I bought a laptop last night for £800 which was £2.3K last year. But tbf, you have to be pretty desperate for cash to take that kind of hair cut. For bike stuff, a lot of...

    26" touring forks advice....

BTW if you value your frame - don't attach anything stronger than it to it. Also in Tunisia, I had a hard stop at a junction and my friend went into me. The bottle cage (a super tough blackburn) was fine - but ripped out one of the bosses on my ritchey tubing frame's down tube. The resulting...

    26" touring forks advice....

Very much agree with this. I cycled in Tunisia for 3 weeks with only rear panniers and the tent, sleeping bag etc strapped on the rear rack in the 90s. But I was with a friend, so we split some gear between us. In my earlier days, I did have front racks (Blackburn IIRC - and it could be...
