    Kona Unit revived

I quite like that bronzy/gold/tan Kona frame. Kind of makes me want to paint something a military-desert-sand colour This would be cool on a bike-packing bike:

    On One Vandal (Titanium) bargain

I picked up a bikepacking bag bargain last week, just need to plan a weekend trip to use them.

    Kona Unit revived

Motorbike handlebar off my 2005 Suzuki Bandit 😂. I fitted a Renthal to that and I never got round to getting rid of the old bar. They are made of pig iron, so weigh a lot, but they have a nice sweep and rise, so they'll do. I've taken to keeping a BMX stem around to fit 22.2mm motorbike bars to...

    Kona Unit revived

This one was really about the build for me: the simple, clean, patina. It's a great bike, but I've moved it on to a new home. My next cruiser will be this: It'll probably be a 1x9 with a front cargo rack. As much as I like the Al grounder tyres I used on the unit (I kept them to use on my...

    Help deciding on/finding a fork

Marzocchi MX Comps or EXR Pro. 2003 was a decent vintage, and I've owned a few of each for the following reasons: They're air forks, not coil They have 105mm travel (basically 100mm) 1 1/8" Straight steerer V-brake and disk compatible (if running disks then the v-brake bosses unscrew very...

    Tubeless pumps

I bought a lifeline track pump with integrated tubeless tyre booster. It was £53 or something off chain reaction, which is the same price as the schwalbe booster which doesn't have the track pump part, it's just a tank that you fill up

    Mangizmos "Rant Of The Day"

https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Orro-Terra-Steel-GRX400-RR9-2023-Gravel-Bike_243728.htm bit dearer, but nicer looking frame and brags about the mounting points on the frame.

    Mangizmos "Rant Of The Day"

https://www.halfords.com/bikes/adventure-bikes/boardman-adv-8.9-mens-adventure-bike-2021---s-m-l-xl-frames-389606.html You've already said you have nothing against Halfords offerings, so I would say you could do a lot worse than this. Mudguards and rack mounts, widish tyres etc. I'd run a 28mm...

    Mangizmos "Rant Of The Day"

Nope, that's press fit that does that. Shimano's hollowtech II has beefy axle advantages, reasonably sized bearings and inexpensive replacement bearing cartridges.

    Mangizmos "Rant Of The Day"

That is largely inaccurate assumption/generalisation. There are lots of gravel bikes that are sub £2000. The 'defining characteristics' you mentioned that you hate are not 'the' defining traits of gravel/adventure bikes. I think if you skip the marketing hype, the actual ethos of them is thus...

Ispec II to standard bar adapter or Hope tech clamp?

I found this chart on the hope tech website, when I was trying to integrate hope tech and tech Evo levers on two of my bikes with ispec-b 11spd XT shifters. I ended up using HBSP263, not sure if any are applicable to your ispec-II

    Low stack stem recommendations needed.

I'll add the funnduro measurement to my notes, and the old/new variants on the Spike.

    Low stack stem recommendations needed.

Pretty sure the community has discussed this before. I've needed low stack stems a few times, so I copied the heights where known. Sunline V-one - 41mm height Ragley stubbing - 32mm Funn Funduro - unknown DMR defy - 30.5mm Spank Spike - 26mm Onoff (something-or-other) - 32mm

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

In my mind, rust is a big part of the rat rod movement. Is 'rat rod' not a car thing before it was a bike thing, and derived from 'hot rod' but instead of clean, shiny chrome, it's a hot rod that's been beaten up and left to rust? I agree with others when they comment about scale. For me...

Building my Son his first proper bike for his 13th birthday! Custom paint job incoming…

That'll be a fantastic gift, with way more personality than a new bike off the shelf. I love the ethos of including him in the build, he'll be even more chuffed to own it and ride it because of this. I'd definitely invest in a damn good lock though, and see that he uses it.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

Started building this at the weekend. It's got 2.5" hookworm tyres, and will hopefully have a front cargo rack. Handlebar is a pig iron thing off my old bandit with a BMX stem.

    Mudguards....do you use them ?

I run full mudguards on my touring/bike packing bike, SKS raceblades on my road bike (seasonal, not permanent), rear crud raceguard and front mudhugger on my hardtail, just an enduro fork thingy on my full suss. The benefit of reduced cleaning of bike and rider is worth it, but full mudguards...

Gravel bike packing, its all done wrong IMO

My take is that it's simpler to pack as many decent sized pannier bags as you need for a trip. I also have a collection of small frame bag, large saddle pack and medium handlebar bag, and I just can't imagine fitting everything I need for a 4 day adventure in those. I used the handlebar bag and...
