I have a pair of '92 XT Brifters - two finger cantilever brake levers and RF+ 3x7 shifters. They are rather "used" but worked well when I took them off the bike I got them on - the paint has worn from the front of the brake levers, but that's about it. The rubber cable covers are still there and...
Mr Cheese,
I occasionally lust after an SM in my less financially responsible moments. Lovely things.
But then every time (so far) I remember that my DS is almost as fast and a whole heap less likely to swallow the entire contents of my overdraft facility for an engine rebuild.
My 1973 Citroën DS23ie Pallas with factory (working) air conditioning system. In AC085 Beige Tholonet with brown (natur) leather interior.
It also has a modern CANEMS fuel injection and engine management system (instead of the unreliable Bosch D-Jetronic system) and produces about 150bhp with a...
I wonder what my copy, signed by Charlie and Joe on the day I met them and accompanied them to their "gig" at Look Mum No Hands in London might be worth? No it's not for sale.
As a kid in rural North Yorkshire in the 70s and early 80s, I remember a "tracker bike" scene.
We used to scour scrap yards/farm yards/known "fly tipping" laybys on local roads for frames and components.
The classic Hutton Rudby tracker (or scrapper) bike was a racer frame with cow horn bars...
It is more about the history of the Spring Classics than cycling them, but "The Beast, The Emperor and the Milkman" by Harry Pearson is a very entertaining read.
I think it is actually quite a personal and subjective thing. Before I discovered Breezers, I enjoyed riding early '90s Marins and found they fitted me well. Specialized Rockhoppers were OK (strange as they looked to be almost identical dimensions and geometry) though, for me they had less...
Sky now "reimaged" as a winter/commuter/go anywhere road/gravel bike using parts from the spares bins:
Shimano 600EX chainset and rear derailleur, Ultegra 9 speed "Brifters", SRAM 950 cassette, Bontrager in-line seatpost, Cinelli 42cm bars, etc.
Well, Enigma, I like it. A lot. My first ride on it was as a rental on my all-time favourite route - Porcupine Rim (from Masons Draw Campground). A ride I'd previously done a dozen or more times on 26" wheeled hardtails and 100mm full suspension bikes. The HD4 was brilliant. Different to the 26"...
About 20g (12-23: PG970 200g, PG-950 220g) and £22 (rrp: PG-970 £56, PG-950 £34).
And the PG-970 is a bit shinier (until your first ride)
Otherwise, I defy anybody here to tell the difference by riding and not looking.
Chainreaction list the weight of the 12-26 tooth PG-950 cassette as 240g. So I'd expect the 11-26 to be within a few grammes of that (it has one cog that is 1 tooth smaller, and 1 that is 1 tooth larger, otherwise they have the same cogs).
Not quite what you are asking for, but if it works for you it's a bit of a bargain:
Chainreaction have SRAM PG-950 cassettes in 11-26 or 11-28 for £17.99
Have you tried spraying a load of WD40 or GT85 into the shifters? A common failure mode for Shimano shifters of this era is for the grease to go hard and prevent the ratchet mechanism from working.
If the "dark side" is 29er, is 1 27.5" wheeled bike a grey area?
If so, then I suppose I've slipped into a grey area with my Ibis Mojo HD4. Which I love. It is different to my 26" wheeled bikes, but great in a new (to me) way.
