Right. First I measured the 27.0mm seatpost and it’s bang on. Then I measured the seat tube which is difficult as the caliper doesn’t go very deep but it came out around 27.2 side to side but 27.0 front to back. So as expected it’s somehow become ovalised. I tried a couple of 27.2 seatposts...

Thanks mate. It's not original paint FYI, it's a re-paint but well done. This build was going to be about as perfect as can be, so I absolutely need to invest in a proper solution that allows for the period correct post if possible. It does look gappy, but I think that's an optical illusion...

Is there such a thing as a cable stop ferrule that has a 6mm internal diameter to go over 6mm SLR cables but then steps back down again to 6mm outer so it will fit in later non SLR brake levers and frame stops? I’ve not had much joy with my googling so far.

I need one the plastic cover thingies that goes between the frame hanger and the mounting bolt. Without it, I think I’m at risk of crushing the paint and there is some play. The thing looks like this:

Whilst I'm sure that's true, it's obviously the kind of plastic film that's meant to be removed and is common on glossy plastic products. I'll definitely look into the paint film though as a long term protection, thanks.

(Or a nice aftermarket one that’s compatible with an XT U brake)

Thanks. Do you know if the text and markers are on or under the clear cap? Mine need a light buffing but I don’t want to buff the text and markers off.

All M732 thumbies show a few tiny bubbles and edge delamination on the plastic cover. Is this actually delamination, or are there sticky plastic protectors from the factory that are meant to be peeled off? I don’t want to pick at mine unless it’s the latter. Example below:
