    Benelux mech is fux’d?

Are you interested in building your wheels? I was about to put the following early 50s wheel bits in the classifieds: -a pair of 32/40 spoke 27x1-1/4” Dunlop steel rims. Front in VGC, rear good condition but has gone through the chrome in a few places on the braking surface. -Resilion 40 hole...

    Benelux mech is fux’d?

Yes that doesn’t look right. My one is at work unfortunately so I can’t take a pic to compare. They were quite easy to bend, especially the alloy ones.

"Isn't modern bicycle technology absolutely wonderful?"😍

It’s a shame the backwards- and cross-compatibility of mechs etc stopped at 10-speed. If I stuck with Shimano and SRAM between my bikes, it was quite handy being able to share cassettes and various other bits between them. On the SRAM-kitted bikes they could mix and match between Rival and, say...

Anyone ever been satisfied with Cantilever brakes ?

Thought I’d replied on this thread LAST YEAR when the user who started the thread actually still used Retrobike. But never mind. No, I’ve never been satisfied with them. Persevered with TRP Eurox and road levers for a couple of years. They looked great but I could never get them to stop the...

claude butler oylimpic coureur 5 speed vintage racing bike,1960s,54cm frame

Don’t drop the price too far if it won’t sell on here. Despite being Retrobike, the earlier stuff is less popular on here than 70s/80s/90s bikes and they can be difficult to sell. You’ll get a better price on eBay, especially if you’re prepared to box it up and send it.

    8Freight Cargo bike - restoration / project

Can’t quite tell but it looks like it might have the hollow 12-sided Allen bolt thing holding it on that normal older Shimano freehubs had. Stick a 10mm or 12mm Allen key down the middle of the freehub and see if it locks into anything. It’ll be quite tight but that might release everything.

Late 40s / Early 50s René Herse tip find

Some bits I’ve been reading, that I stumbled across via this Velo Orange article from 2007: https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2007/01/maxi-car-hubs.html?m=1 This René Herse Concourse has quite similar bits to mine: https://www.ebykr.com/tech-specs-1951-rene-herse/ Some bits on the Maxi Car...

Late 40s / Early 50s René Herse tip find

I’ve had a pretty serious session with the wire wool today. The TLDR is I’m probably ready to do some reassembly. Test fit time. Naked: Dressed: Aluminium foil really wasn’t cutting through the oxidation so I swapped to wire wool. I had a big carrier bag full of it this morning and now...

Ha, I see your tape was painted down too! I have to admit, I did consider soaking mine in solvent. It probably would have made the job a bit easier but I couldn’t face the sticky mess or having to explain why the house stank of solvents. At least hoovering up the bits gave the vacuum cleaner a...

What BB do you use with Dura Ace 7400?

I'm pretty sure BBs like the UN55 aren't symmetric either and are longer on the DS. In the past I've just slipped a 2mm spacer onto the drive side to centre the driveline.

so old MTB frame to gravel bikes? thoughts? update on 30/06/24

Here’s my 1992-ish Rudy Project which was in bits in the shed when you came round for the GT frame @jonnyboy666 . Can’t remember why I had it apart but, yeah, great plan! I put this one together over lockdown so I could explore the local paths with my little’un on the back and it just turned out...

Fun and games getting the tape off these bars. I had a bit of garage time today and started rubbing the frame down with foil and WD40. I only took enough foil round to make a light start, so moved onto the bars instead. There was at least 5 layers of tape. All of them had shellac or rosin on...

    Early Burlite Brake Info?

Not seen these before but I’m familiar with bikes and components from the late 30s into the 50s. I’m definitely of the same opinion as Peter Underwood in the Classic Lightweights article that these look like a pre-war design that were being made after the war. Side-pull calliper brakes were...

    Rude lunchtime Rudy Project

Out in the wild. I did the shopping run for a test ride and apart from adjusting the gear cable it needed nothing done. Didn’t even notice how smashed up the roads were. Well happy. @sam_white no numbers I’m afraid.
