Late 40s / Early 50s René Herse tip find

The missus has abandoned me for the weekend and taken the kids with her. That leaves me at a loose end and it’s a nice evening, so I’ve got set up on the deck with a beer and some bikes. First up is the chain on the RH. It’s a basic 3/32” YBN with completely flat side plates and it seems to...

    Old rubber

You kind of take your chances with old tyres unfortunately. There’s not much you can do about it. Once the rubber oxidises and hardens there’s not much you can do about it. As GIGFY said, Vaseline will attack the rubber. Anything you put on them will only be cosmetic.

Late 40s / Early 50s René Herse tip find

I haven't had a chance to do anything else yet. I got 3/32" chain with no chamfers on the side plates but I haven't had a chance to fit it. I'm still planning to get the derailleur apart and press in or bond in a brass shim to bring the movement back into tolerance. I don't think it'll shift...

    Yesterday's street find

You can put a 38T inner ring on those cranks and the rear mech will take a cassette with a 28. It *might* clear a 30 or 32 but no guarantees.

That should rule it out as French then.

    Sealant for tub punctures.

I’ve had mixed success. It sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. So I tend to carry a spare tub instead.

    Help identifying 1950s Road bike

Bargain for £30! It looks like it probably just needs a damn good clean and a strip and rebuild with plenty of grease. It’s definitely not a Sun or a Parkes because the serial number is wrong for those. Ignore the raised number on the bottom bracket - that’s just the model number for the...

    Best Find at the Dump?

GIGFY mentioned I’d found a René Herse. Apart from a 70s Brooks I sneaked out about 10 years ago, that’s all I’ve ever managed to get from the tip. They’re very strict about not taking anything even though I regularly ask. I don’t know why I got lucky that day!

Thanks! I've done maybe 30,000 miles on that bike!

Whats your work horse, daily, go to, get around bike

These two do most of my riding duties. Rudy Project mtb is early 90s with 9-speed X0 and DX brakes. XB3 Спорт is a Soviet track bike from about 1984-1987.

What is your Holy Grail among Japanese frame builders or marques?

I don’t know enough about the scene to say 100% for sure, but I think they’re pretty exclusive NJS keirin frames. They’re always finished impeccably and there are nowhere near the numbers for sale secondhand compared to Bridgestone, Level, Makino etc. Pricewise on the secondhand market it’s...

Random Viscount Tourer - prob. parts bike

I don’t remember seeing an aero-section tubeset from them. ‘Aerospace’ was their USP grade of steel they used, based on their aerospace background.

    Roll out the Barra

Paint job looks bob on to me. Great you can run it as a bike as well as a trike. Is it actually a Claud originally under the various repaints?

Unacceptable behaviour. Open box and pics or I’m reporting this to the mods.

Random Viscount Tourer - prob. parts bike

There was a cheaper frame set as well. Lugged gas pipe sort of quality, probably chromoly Reynolds 501 sort of level. I had one about 15 years ago and did have a thread on here but the pics will be long gone. I’ve never been able to find much information about them. I remember it had quite an...

Wow, love the brazed-on / silver soldered Carlton badge. I’m not well up on my early Carltons, but not seen that before.
