Film and TV stars and their bikes!

I’m not well up on my Raleigh Choppers but did I understand it right that he did it on a kids size Chopper?

    Tubs for 27inch wheels

Yes, got tubs on a couple of sets of wheels from 50s to 00s. I’m 99.999999999% certain that 27”, 28”, 29” and 700c tubs are all the same size but for some reason sellers (and for that matter manufacturers) seem to refer to them as all of those sizes. It’s very confusing.

How old is this old Pegeot?

That post is from 2006 and the user hasn’t been back to the forum since. That’s 18 years! Polite reminder to everyone to check what you’re replying to.

    Lightest Steel Frame?

Ishiwata did by far the thinnest wall tubing. 015 would have been the lightest frame you could build, assuming you were light enough to ride it safely! Some of the current Kasei tube sets used in NJS keirin are probably as light. Stronger steel and multiple butting too.

    Crank road to mtb

You can put it on. Smallest inner ring you can fit on a 130bcd is a 38 and you might find it doesn’t clear the stay. If the frame has a brazed-on front derailleur mount it might not be high enough to clear a road outer ring. Very straight road cranks might not clear the stays without a very wide...

Yikes - the slackest seat tube in the world? ….

N would be 1946/47 for that eBay one 👍 The L might denote it was a Parkes-built frame. I’ve seen it mentioned but I’ve never had it confirmed.

Is this a fake Brooks saddle?

Yes, that's a 1980s Brooks. I've had one with that badge on it.

Does anyone know what is my GT bike model and year?

Pretty sure that’s an Edge and same era as the Edge Aero. That puts it from around 1997 to around 2002 I think. Someone would have to confirm though 👍

Shortened Brooks Swift saddles - Does anyone know about these?

    Hex-shaped adjuster is normal. I’ve had a 1970s B17 and a 1980s Flyer with them 👍

Shortened Brooks Swift saddles - Does anyone know about these?

Not saying it wasn’t a thing but I’ve never seen it mentioned anywhere. A standard Brooks doesn’t have those bullet shaped things on the fronts of the rails. I think what you’re looking at is a modified saddle where the rails have been cut and sleeved, but as for why they didn’t make new rails...

    Retro vs modern

    I don’t think I appreciated how much bigger a modern 29er is compared to a 26” mtb!

    First Ever Steel/Other Bike Owned

I had a steel Raleigh junior racer in the 1980s but got back into cycling in the early 00s when I picked up an early 90s Raleigh Strada in Reynolds 531. I guess my first taste of a quality frame was in the late 00s (?) when I bought an early 70s Bob Jackson from Old Ned on here. Rode the wheels...

    Cannondale downtube bosses

^ Read all of that thread before trying to prise the bosses off. You need the flat-backed mounts like the ones linked to on page 2 at SJS Cycles.

    Wester Ross #192

I forgot to reply to this. The frame does indeed look nicely put together even though it’s well hidden under the powder coat! What rims and tyres have you got on there? I can see the tyres are 30mm wide and the rims look like a good fit with them.

LOOKING TO UPGRADE 1x7 SRAM XD SETUP TO 1X10 ?

1x10 X0 works well. More range and/or less gappy. I have a Shimano 11-34 cassette and a 34T narrow wide at the front. It's plenty of gearing for on road and plenty of bail-out gearing for off road. I have the same 11-34 setup on a 9-speed and it's gappy - you can feel yourself needing the gear...

    J Mortimer ???

108 is probably the house number since it’s stamped in the same . That postcode points to Cutlers Place, Wimborne. Does this Google Streetview link work? That looks like a 50s or 60s house. https://maps.app.goo.gl/c39eKdzpchSfwjmMA?g_st=ic
