Very strange considering all the wheels that we have (which were all stored with the bikes) were 27 x 1 1/4, this means I'll either need to get a set of smaller rims or a shorter reach caliper and just forgo the mudguard at the front 🤷🏼

. Well mini update, managed found a front wheel to test to put into the bikes. Fits fine in the carpenter, but whilst it fits the frame of the Claud butler, the front brake caliper is too long for the 27 1/4 rim (although a rear wheel at 27 1/4 fits fine with the brakes in line with the rim...

Thank you for your response too, would definitely love to keep the bikes in as original condition as possible. Am in discussions with Guinness who is giving me loads of useful information and help. Hopefully I can get these bikes back to some semblance of their former selves :)

Noted, therefore wheel rebuild is best option it seems, unless there is a set of clinchers that match that can be used. I'll have to try and do some research on either how to do it, or where to get it done. Just don't want to mess it up 😅

Thank you, I'll try post some pictures of the other wheels I have tomorrow or at the weekend. I assume the only way new wheels would then ever fit is to file the dropout slot (which I think I saw something about on the Sheldon brown Raleigh article)

If I resort to new wheels rather than re-building the wheels, what should I look for in order to make sure new Axle's fitnthe dropouts? Thanks again for all the info, this has been a huge help.

Thank you for the tip, I'll measure the Carpenter as I still have that one with me at mine. The one thing my mate mentioned is that the axle of newer wheels didn't seem to fit the dropout either. Do older bikes tend to use thinner Axle's? And if so is it possible to still get newer wheels with...

I am Greater London just to the South of Purley inside of the M25 (Old Coulsdon) but my work mate who has the bike currently is Teddington way (bout an hour away from me to the west)

So the pictures of the wheel on its own are a different wheel to the ones currently on the bike. I think there was at least one more wheel that my friend took with him when he was having a look so I will have a check with him and see if I can get him to take a photo of it too.

The two photos attached show where my friend has got to with doing a bit of clean up. Like I say he's just stumped on how to resolve the wheels. I also have one more wheel at my house which I attach some separate photos of, we aren't even really sure what wheels were for what bike originally...
