[SOLD] 1991 Kona Lava Dome, 17"

SOLD FOR £90 I am selling a 17" 1991 Kona Lava Dome mountain bike. The bike has a Tange double butted cromoly frame and is largely original, with a Shimano Exage 500LX groupset, Project 2 forks, Velocity stem, Impact headset, Kona 165 handlebar and Araya RX-7 rims. The frame has some surface...

17" Kona Joe Murray Lava Dome 91/92

My bike. If anyone has any questions, please ask away.

This picture (not my bike) better illustrates the colour I want for the fork and stem. I don't know what you'd call it, but it's not silver.

I'm just taking the highly unscientific approach of taking the existing parts down to Argos and asking "match these, please"!

Just a quick couple of photos of the stem I have for colour comparison, which I will be getting Argos to colour match for the stem and fork. The very bright lights in the kitchen have bleached out the bronze/gold to a certain extent, though it helps if you look at the contrast from the silver...

1994 Kona Fire Mountain restoration project.

Finally got the frame back today. That drive-side crank was properly seized on there; after cutting away a good amount of the aluminium around the square taper, Mark still had to 'persuade' the remainder off the bottom bracket axle with a hammer! I took the opportunity to weigh the bare frame...

Yep, exactly that colour. I'm toying with the idea of having the Evolution clamps and braces for my Maguras done in the same colour, too.

Ah well, I've got a bronze/gold Velocity stem that I'm going to get Argos to colour match. Not bothered about what's correct or not, as I've no intention of selling it on. I'm just going with what I find pleasing to my eye.

The wierd thing is, from that illustration, you'd think the plain gauge tube would be the lightest.

As I understand it, a single butted tube will be x thickness at the two ends, with a stepped reduction in thickness towards the middle. A double butted tube would have two stepped reductions, so the centre would be thinner yet, and a triple butted tube would have three steps. This is, of...

The Fire Mountain isn't plain gauge, incidentally. Admittedly not double butted, but still butted Tange cromoly.

1994 Kona Fire Mountain restoration project.

The Fire Mountain is a '94 and is complete with a nice set of triple butted Project 2s, the Lava Dome is a '91. Additionally, the Fire Mountain is the right size for me but the Lava Dome is a little small. Add in the gorgeous colour of the Fire Mountain and the nostalgia factor of this being a...

Bit of an update on this. The frame is still with Mark at Bikepost but, in the meantime, I've bought an entire 1991 Lava Dome just for it's silver chainrings! I've swapped them with the black rings from my FC-M730 crankset and the LD will be sold on. Before... And after!

    94 (I think) Kona AA

Love the Crud Bung in the underside of the steerer, such a simple and effective product but I haven't seen one in years. For forks, the 'obvious' choice would be Project 2s, but the alu frame with a rigid fork could be pretty harsh. Some period Rock Shox or Manitous would suit it nicely.

    That looks pretty tidy.

Nice one. I bet that shifts like a stabbed rat!

Dropped the frame off this morning at Bikepost in Troon. The crank wouldn't come off even using a three-arm puller, so it's properly stuck on there. Mark's going to get medieval with hacksaws and grinders and let me know when it's ready...
