Rapid rise -- stick or shift?

I pulled the Rapid Rise off of one of my bikes. I definitely miss it. I did a 1x11 conversion on my 26" 2004 KHS Team Issue Softtail XC bike (with Schwalbe Kojak slicks). I got a 46t Wide narrow chain ring in the middle position on the vintage XT v1 splined cranks. I picked up a M7000 GS...

Rapid rise -- stick or shift?

Since there was some interest in this Ebike hack, here is an update. One user who had chain drop offroad (his street bike it worked just fine, both 1500W BBSHD). Added a clutch type derailleur to his MTB. That solved the problem for him by pulling slack out of the chain all the way around. So...

    Trp Spykes vs bb7

BTW there are 2 versions of the BB7. The vintage Avids, and the newer SRAM versions. I use the ones I bought in 2004, or ones from Ebay ($35/pair). So for true retro snobs there that to disagree about. The newer ones have a cross shaped outer adjuster, and a bigger inner knob like the BB5 has...

    Trp Spykes vs bb7

Since this is Retrobike 20 DH racing seasons should be enough. That would be-BB7s!

    Trp Spykes vs bb7

The TRP Spykes did seem to have a different ratio to them than the BB7s. Being newer perhaps they're more suitable for larger wheels? There are some experienced Ebike builders who use them. I suppose Retrobike is not the place this test is going to happen. I remember one "experienced" Ebuilder...

    Trp Spykes vs bb7

I did a direct comparison on my 26" XC Softtail between the existing BB7 brakes 185/160 rotors and metallic pads, versus TRP Spyre and Spyke brakes. I upgraded the cables per TRP to Jagwire Elie Link with Aluminum hardlines instead of flex housing as needed. Nice weight weeny stuff for the XC...

    Chain lube science.

I know chain lube discussions can be like religion for a lot of people. At Zero Frictiob Cycling it's a science. They test chains and lubrcants and publish the results. They earn their living offering the best of these to racers. They call ZFC "where good lubricants go to die" because of how...

You didn't make eye contact. They looked in your direction for oncoming CARS. Seeing none they went ahead. They were looking right through you. There are a couple places where I cross roads with 45mph speed limts. I use the pedestrian cross signals there. Typically 3 cars will run though the...

I can see a DIYer taking the easy way out and building a front hubmotor bike. Or a trike where the rear drive might be complicated already. But to offer one commercially? I would say this was predictable.

In a more civilized place than where I live that looks like a very good option. Where I'm at it's a toss up which is a worse idea, riding a motorcycle on the street or a pedal bike in the bike lane. By stealthy means I avoid both those places if at all possible. A waitress at the waterfront...

" lobbied for by bicycle-maker Raleigh, that allowed electrically-assisted two- and three-wheelers onto UK roads. However, they were only permitted at speeds up to 15mph." There you have it. Rah Rah Raleigh! RALEIGH, ALLOWED, 15MPH.

An interesting ride home tonight. Coming down an overpass i saw the light of a vehicle catching up to me. I wasn't in a hurry but I was going downhill at about 20mph. Due to somw cross traffic it was a while before I could see what it was. A young guy about 20 years old on one of those 1 wheel...

I actually ride at 18-20mph on bike paths. If there's a big headwind I might be "towing" a cyclist behind me. But if I'm in the road with traffic (which I avoid as much as possible) then our legal limit of 27mph is useful. On sidewalks when there are pedestrians I turn the assist off, and...

You're correct about the Suron. It's an Electric dirtbike. But I see E bikes and Pedelecs as 2 separate categories. E bikes have various restrictions in various places. Pedelec I believe is a category that is equivalent to an electric Moped. It has pedals but 2HP/30mph- 50kph and a throttle...

There might be an opportunity to improve the situation of those with a 250W/ 15nph limit. There is a 350W 20mph classification that is observed in most places. Even in the US many crowded places impose that. Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and other OEMs don't like to have to produce bikes to other...

I will be 70 in about a month. I give young fit guys a tow in some of the winds here. I'm a big fan of Florida Man stories. I know some guys who really could live up to that. But most of them are no longer with us. There are several newspaper reporters who make their living since the collapse...

I run Vintage Avid (not SRAM) BB7 brakes with metallic pads, and 203mm/180mm Shimano ICE alloy rotors. Jagwire Pro Elite Link segmented alloy cables for the flexible parts, and metal automotive hydraulic lines over the rest. Used to be called Full Metal Jacket. Before the ICE rotors the paint...

I'm not going to hijack the thread with this. I'll just link to a recent post of mine in an Ebike forum. https://electricbike.com/forum/forum/main-forum/general-discussions/163203-why-i-need-1500w-on-the-street

My brother who rides a pedal bike in NYC. suffered a concussion, and has a knee problem. He was hit from the side by a fast moving electric scooter ( basically an electric skateboard with handle bar riser). The rider ran a stop sign and collided with my brother who was emerging in the bike lane...

Up to 20 mile rides I can take my XComfort bike (Vintage XC Sofftail with slicks). The hard part is moving the anti theft gear over from the Ebike. The wheels and fork on the XC Race bike are much more worth stealing. Also the big lock negates a lot of the advantage. But once I do that I'll...
