Avid BB7s in the modern world.

Rebuild kits are available for the SRAM BB7s, but not the Avids. There are now road BB7s with a ratio for drop bar brake levers, and MTN-S versions with stainless bolts and an anodized finish. The Ebike can damage the paint on the normal versions. Or at least it did before the Icetech upgrade.

Avid BB7s in the modern world.

A few words on rotor sizes, and brackets. The original AVID rotors sizes were 160,185, and 203mm. The uneven size steps and 160mm f/140mm r bases sizes made different bracket for each size, and each end of the bike necessary. Modern SRAM rotors come in 160mm/180mm/ qnd 200mm (220/223mm do...

Avid BB7s in the modern world.

My 2004 Gary Fisher Solstice 26" comfort bike ahd Avid BB7s added to it when new. It's also had a 1500W motor a few years ago. The BB7s are still there. But the stress of the motor led me to a few upgradesthat I feel keep them on par with all but the be$t hydraulics. First off there are 2 series...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

For some reason vintage Mavic hubs came with HG11 freehub bodies that take modern Shimano 11s cassettes. The Prestacycle stuff is CNC billet like the high end SRAM stuff. If you have a bike that can use them they're discounted here. I suppose VAT and shipping might change thing in the UK...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Since I like rapid Rise i'm stuck using older RD. Extended hanger brackets, Bracket extenders can take you pretty far beyong the original spec at the cassette end. But the capacity limit is still there. But some people want to go beyond that also. By using it as 2 separate 1x system it's been...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Sometimes you can go a bit beyond the listed spec. with a longer B screw. It's been suggested that Shimano is conservative here on parts like the Zee FR derailleur because on long travel suspenaion bikes there can be some chain growth with suspension movement. The guys at MTBR which is a huge...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

In the vintage Shimnao derailleur numbering scheme 770 would have been Low Normal aka Rapid Rise. and 771 would have been the conventional High Normal part. 10 speed and up they stopped offering that option.

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

I made a thread in an Ebike forum for doing the Front Freewheel Mod. on hubmotor bikes. More benefits than on a pedal bike, but the mod. is exactly the same. My other threads on this are long because I was figuring out how to do it as I went along. This one is much simpler and better organized...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

2/3+2/3 is not as long as a hanger with an extender added. But using an Xacto hobby saw you can cut opposite ends off of 2 hangers and make a longer one. The DIY idea looks good except a lot of hangers are thinner in some places, which is a little harder to DIY. But yes 40t with just a longer B...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I'm running an old XTR mid cage Rapid Rise 9 speed derailleur with an 11-40t 8s cassette. I used a longer B screw. I had previously welded up a 2/3+2/3 slightly longer hanger out of 2 stock ones, but it broke in a parking lot incident. It worked also. But on a 26" urban bike I like to keep the...

Rapid rise -- stick or shift?

I didn't update this thread because I started putting the material in a Front Freewheel Mod thread. https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/rapid-rise-vs-front-freewheel-or-both.473844/page-5#post-3617149 I ended up with a 1x11 42t to11-42t Prestacycle HG11 lightweight cassette, and SLX deraillleur...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

I went to a more upright riding position on this bike now that it's very comfy with the RH tires. Taking load off the front made the handling have a mind of it's own. I guess the agressive XC geometry relied on your weight pushing forward on the flat bars, and long stem for centering. Taking...

Is that what Guinness is doing for you?

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

Moron this. I used to run the bars much lower than the saddle, and a 48t chain ring. But in urban riding around here keeping an eye on other vehicles takes priority. Also at 70yo the speeds I'm "going" rolling resistance, and low rotating mass for acceleration help as much as aero. For me XC=...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

"I don't understand why you didn't simply use an Alfine internally geared hub. It's more reliable and can shift when stationary." I'll go down the list of reasons why this bike doesn't need an Alfine 11. It's a fair comparison in a lot of ways. 1- It's heavy. Some bikes that doesn't matter...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

This was a 3x8 XC bike built 20 years ago. It already had Rapid Rise from the start. Light weight is a big part of the appeal of this bike. I also Own a Trek Navigator 400 for my wife that has a Nexus 8. Nexus/Alfine doesn't come in a 24 bladed spoke setup. Straight pull or otherwise. The FFW...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

The Rene HERSE tires are great. But I decided to go all in on the light weight, and low rolling resistance with Vittoria Latex inner tubes. The daily air loss was expected. But both tires completely flat after a couple days off wasn't. They worked great for the 3 rides I got out of them. I added...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

I don't even think they bothered to do it on purpose. To get Regnerative braking on mid drive Ebikes, they had to lock the rear freewheel. So it just happened. I wonder if they used a friction drive with a clutch on each separate cog like they did last time. I do it with a friction ring behind...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

The RH Extralight tires are doing everything RH says they do. I'm riding this more than the Ebike now. I went with Latex tubes to get the full effect. I also bought a small battery powered compressor with digital psi gauge to air them up daily. As far as the FFW goes, no issues except that...

Rapid Rise vs. Front Freewheel (or both?)

Rene HERSE Rat Trap Pass 26x2.3 Extralight gravel slicks. 410g. down from 570g on the Scwalbe 26x2 slicks. Softer faster stickier. Expensive handmade racing tires. Retro looks and totally up to date performance. I started thread on this but it got infested with morons before the tires showed up.
