Avid BB7s in the modern world.

Just an update on my experience with the BB7/ Icetech rotor setup. I picked up a pair of the latest BB7 Mountain S calipers on closeout. I didn't really need them, the 20yo ones are working just fine. But I pulled the original Avids off of the Ebike to get them back on my 2004 softtail XC bike...

Is it acceptable to mix cable outer colours?

IDK anything a bout Trak Pearls. The JW stuff has a Teflon liner inside from end to end. I don't think dirt effects these MTB parts much Lighter weight was a claimed selling point for vee brake XC bikes back in the day. I've gone completely away from flex housing anywhere it isn't needed. Steel...

Is it acceptable to mix cable outer colours?

Jagwire Elite Link cable housings are alloy beads that go over a Teflon tube. They come in various anodized colors. You could actually makes some strobed cables with those. I did black and silver on my bike because it's black and silver. It makes it obvious that I don't have hydraulic disc...

    Retro E-Bike conversion.

Grin technology in Canada is a good resource for hubmotor info. Actual engineers there. https://ebikes.ca/ I see links to them just above this, but I'll leave it in to 2nd the motion. In fact I just looked there and they're overstocked on their smaller hubmotor kits because every one is buying...

    Bikes and puddles

During the peak of Wednesday’s deluge, a month’s worth of rain fell in just one hour. Fort Lauderdale’s average rainfall for April is 3 inches and it’s been nearly 25 years since the city totaled 20 inches of rain in an entire month...

    Bikes and puddles

No photos. just a story or two. I live in South Florida where the weather can change quite a bit. Story #1- I took my daily Ebike ( Converted "04 Gary Fisher) ride from the suburbs (11 miles) into downtown Ft. Lauderdale for lunch at a waterfront tavern. I took my usual carefully planned route...

    Riser bar or riser stem?

I would say possibly both. If you go too far with the riser bar it will have leverage in offroad situations and could rotate in the clamp. On my XC bike I went from a drop stem to a sit up stem that was shorter. The already quick handling became unstable and I had to add a 1* angle headset to...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

You may be right to some extent. With the zip tie mod to (softly) lock out the rear freewheel, if it needed to throw some slack into the top run of the chain downshifting at high speeds it would snap the breakaway zip tie even though it's supposed to just be there as a fail safe in case the...

    White ENO Freewheel

I used the SJS tandem cranks with the Ebike ENO to make a Front Freewheel setup on my 2004 XC/street bike. This is either retro 70's Shimano crap, or the latest hing in custom DH racing cranks from Intend Magic Cranks. But aside from that a great freewheel as is. This is the SJS adapter and...

    White ENO Freewheel

These have been around BMX for some time (2002), and Trials bikes too. Generally regarded as the best hard use 1 speed freewheel. They're still made in USA. Parts are readily available. Standard English freewheel threads. They do wrap around the end of the threaded freewheel boss. So a spacer...

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

There just aren't that many old bikes here in Florida. The whole area didn't develop until after WWII, and then bicycles were considered children playthings There was a baby boom you know.. The climate and the spread out development still doesn't favor it. Racing bikes, touring bikes simply...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

Yes this is the mid drive Ebike. But it's my 2004 Gary Fisher so Retro stuff lives on. Like Avid BB7s. Rapid Rise, and Revoshifter. FFW too. The 33t total capacity RD leaves a little play at each end with the 29t range cassette. This is ridden long and hard daily. It even works under water...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

There are 2 ,11-40t 8 speed cassettes I've used. Sunrace was the first and they're a little over $20. They work just fine. basic cogs and spacers. This one is a Shimano HG400-8. The 2 large cogs are riveted to a spider, and the gear splits are more even, about $30. I don't go 9 speed because I...

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

This is M960 with 11-40t GS in top gear. Lots of range left This is in low gear 40t. Longer B screw, and not too short on the chain. I used the yellow zip tie to pull the chain tighter, as if 1 link shorter. The cage hits the cog. SS cages don't have that hump on them. On the chain stay you...

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

I personally prefer bikes that can actually be ridden.... But the photos are nice, and the bikes do qualify as art.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

I like it that he's still supporting the 26" tire format with modern high performance tires. The smooth ride, quick acceleration, and sharp handling work well for city bikes. A market he seems to have absolutely no interest in. Jan Hine does seem to be a controversial figure. I have his Rat Trap...

I took the photos of the 11-40t XTR setup. They're stuck in my phone for now.

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

What about the shift cable setup? Internal routing can flap around inside the frame losing some motion. If you put tension on the cable does any flex housing move around anywhere? I started sorting this out on brakes, then started doing my shifters too. Compressionless housings?

I edited some more FD stuff into my preceding comment.

XTR M952 Short Cage - Maximum Rear tooth capacity

I've run 48-32-28. The shift from 48-32 was slow but always worked. But that was before I converted it to an Ebike 1x8. I wasn't doing anything with large cassettes back then. LX M580 Mega 9 is what I had. Are you using trigger shifters or grips? Maybe a gripshifter willl let you feel it into...
