My 1993 Rockhopper Sport commuter bike along with my 1991 S-Works Cross. While the Cross is mostly original, I traded the Exage parts for Deore LX on the Rockhopper. Much better!

    1991 GT Karakoram

My next project will be this lovely 1991 GT Karakoram with the iconic "Blue Widow" paint job. The guy I bought this bike from used it as a daily commuter for years, so it is far from spotless! Hopefully, it can continue to be somebody else's commuter for many more years after I'm done. I...

    Mid 1990's Specialized Hardrock/Rockhopper geometry

My 1993 Rockhopper Sport is a 20". It has a 22.5" top tube, so quite short for a large bike. It is perfect for me (I'm 6'0"), but it feels smaller than some of my other bikes of the same size. 19" or 20" should be perfect for you! I never owned a Hardrock, but I love my Rockhopper, I'd...

Why do you collect retro bikes?

I like mountain biking and mountain bikes, old and modern! Personally, it's not a nostalgia thing since most of the bikes I collect are older than me:LOL: I just think there is something nice about the simplicity and elegance of retro bikes. Early to mid-90s is probably my favorite time period...

BoTM Bike of The Month November 2023 - "Rider Special" now taking entries

@Guigui58 Kona Cinder Cone 1991. Although the drivetrain has been modernized a bit, the rest of the bike is mostly original. I use it pretty often alternating with my more modern bike! After a typical ride :

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

I like them, not very agressive and fast rolling so they're perfect if you use them on asphalt and light gravel.

BoTM Bike of the month October 2023 - now taking entries

Late entry! @Guigui58 Kona Explosif 1993 No build thread since I'm fairly new to this forum. Built with a mix of Deore XT and XTR M900.

My 1992 S-Works Cross, also super happy with it!

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

Last minute change of heart, I decided to save the dropbar conversion for later and go with flat bars for now. The only dropbars I have on hand were probably made for a track bike; the sections where the shifters are supposed to clamp are too narrow. I never could stop them from moving around...

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

Pretty sure it was made in Japan like you say. This isn't a "Made in the USA" model, the decal on the top tube simply says "Designed in the USA".

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

I know that some companies made higher end hybrid bikes in the early / mid 90s (the 1994 Klein Adept for example), maybe at the time the were trying to start a new trend? This probably didn't work very well since hybrid bikes stayed, but as lower end models for more casual riders... It seems to...

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

Things progressed last week! The wheels are now true, broken spokes were replaced and the hub bearings are repacked. The tires look great on this bike and will be perfect for the type of terrain I'll be riding (mostly road and gravel). Despite being 38mm wide, there's still plenty of space for...

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

Taking the bike apart went smoothly, it probably was not used much and stored inside for all these years. The paint looks even nicer after cleaning everything up! Next step is to fix and clean the wheels. I found some almost new tires on Marketplace, Schwalbe G-One Allround 28" x 1.5", which...

    1992 Specialized S-Works Cross

This is technically not a MTB, but close! Let me know if this is the wrong place to post this thread. I found this 1992 Specialized S-Works Cross earlier this summer on Marketplace. Having never heard of this model, I started by ignoring the Facebook ad simply titled "hybrid bike". However...

    show us your Rocky Mountains!

Yes I used first gen. Deore XT (Deerhead) on the 86 Blizzard (and Suntour XC Power roller cam brakes at the back)!

    show us your Rocky Mountains!

My 1989 Blizzard ...and my even older 1986 Blizzard! Both ride nicely, but in very different ways!
