Ha, as if! It’s with Steve. Which means I’m on Steve’s time now. Which means sometime this year. Or maybe next!

    Reimagining a 1988 Merlin Mountain

Mud clearance? None. But luckily it’s usually dry here! It works pretty well, as described above. I think the only reason they say it can’t work as a U-brake is due to the thickness of the studs. Reduce the thickness and problem solved. Maybe the spacing isn’t exactly as designed, but...

The Late, Great Bontrager Race Lite

Why isn’t it built yet!? The fork looks perfect. And I actually think suits the Race Lite more than the Merlin. Not like it looked bad on the Merlin, but…

    Reimagining a 1988 Merlin Mountain

    1. I would agree that 91/'92 is the absolute sweet spot. Especially if you can find one with some of the more interesting details and back decals! But the early ones certainly have the most charm, for me, anyway! The cable routing "block" on the downtube on this one is one of my favorite things...

    Reimagining a 1988 Merlin Mountain

I'm actually really glad you asked that. So I can't pretend that the plan originally was to build a "forever bike"; the frame was originally built on for one very specific ride and reason. And I always imagined after that I would revert back to something period. I did think an old titanium bike...

    Reimagining a 1988 Merlin Mountain

Looking like I just got out of bed, right after the aforementioned singletrack ride! Proof it gets muddy tho!

And the last of the tweaks, for now: Decided to try a "modern" saddle! ;) The Unicantor is great, looks amazing and it both comfortable and insanely light. It might well come back at some point. But for now it's destined for another project I'm about to start work on, so I'm going to...

Meanwhile, the last big adjustment that had to be made was to the drivetrain. Now, as much as I love the Cooks, and as good as they look, neither spindle I have for this bike is the right taper for them. Both cause the crank arms to bottom out, leaving no room for the bolts to be properly...

    Reimagining a 1988 Merlin Mountain

Right then, next up: the rear wheel. I mentioned it before, but as you can see in a few photos, it was sporting mix-matched wheels for a minute. The reason was the rear White Industries hub's freewheel had given up the ghost on one of its earliest rides. I hemmed and hawed about what to do...

    Reimagining a 1988 Merlin Mountain

Why does this question also sound like an insult? ;) Ha. I do have a lot to say about how it works, tho. I just hadn't got around to that part yet! Regarding the sleeve issue: I chose, probably somewhat controversially, to resolve this by removing material from the stud, rather than try to...

And the one in the stand next might not get any Pau... No, wait, yeah, I'm moving some Touring Cantilever's from another build over to it, aren't I? Hmmm. Well, then there's the one after that, the Ro... Oh. Nope. That's getting the Racers I used for testing on this one. Damn it. Well...

Is there such thing as canti to u brake adapters?

How about turning U-brake bosses into Canti bosses, so you can run a Racer brake that definitely isn't a U-brake?
