Why are thumb shifters so prized in the retrobike community?

And to add to this, while the later STI was pretty good I stuck with a thumbie for the front mech shifting because it allowed infinite micro adjustment so there was never any chainrub. I did the same on my road bike at the time, keeping a downtube front shifter and a brifter for the rear gears...

Wowsers! I've almost completed my bike now!

    NOS XTR M900 rear mech’

It's given me an idea now. I'm going to compile a bike from the most expensive retro ebay parts I can find and see what the total would cost me if I was daft enough and money was no object. This mech goes in the basket for sure.

    Raleigh Chopper MK2 - you'll never see a worse one...ever!

Wow, you're not wrong. Gotta be a canal find. Love the floating wheels. Imagine shelling out £85 to get a box of rust delivered.

    Innovations that weren't...

Have to disagree with you on the flexstem. It was what you might call nowadays a 'marginal gain' compared to rigid forks before the widespread adoption of front suspension forks from the RS1 onwards. It really helped to take the buzz from the bars on long hardpack but gravelly trails for sure. A...

    Small 1992 Orange Clockwork.

You may have a very difficult job persuading your lad onto this after he's experienced modern tech unfortunately. I bought a teeny tiny old Rockhopper frame like this for my missus and will need to get some photos up on here at some point. Look forward to seeing the end result from the Orange.

For Sale Giro Ventoux retro helmet blue

Ah, a good guess then! I was very likely there that day too as there weren't that many races on up north to miss one like this. Always a tough course.

For Sale Giro Ventoux retro helmet blue

As an aside from the helmet, was the photo of you taken in Scotland (Kirkhill forest perhaps?). I recognise the rider to your right - Barry Nicol who rode for Moray Firth Racing Team. Looks to be about 92/93.

Arghhh!! Look how they've placed it derailleur side down. Barely used and looks completely stock other than the saddle...plus some new scratches these plonkers have likely added

    1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Epic

My component gathering is coming to a head after several months so I've set out what's been accumulated. Some has kindly come via members on here and others from the selling sites. Although I did say I'm impatient to get on with things, I'm paradoxically quite able to play the long game to try...

Boing! Too good to be true?

Just bought a Softride stem from the States on Ebay at an unbelievable price - $25 and that was an offer too. Postage is the same again but all in all worth a punt given they are usually in the low hundreds before shipping. I've always wanted to have one on a build after seeing them in the early...
