    Be careful with cable lengths as too long or too short will tend to pull the caliper to one side or the other.

    Re: balls. In a bicycle context any shiny balls are good to go. It's the very poor cup and cone surfaces that are the problem

    With jbweld or its pound shop equivalent you sort of can, kind of, so if the steerer gets worn through a slack headset it's not the end of the world

    The fork crown looks very similar to the one on my Romany, which may be made by Haden, and the dropouts are identical. But these parts were very popular and my frame is not chromed as yours appears to be.

    Ned my British Eagle Touristique and my Mercian built Revell Romany both have that fluted / dished top to the seat stay. Maybe it was a popular flourish in the mid / late 80s

    As above, gently persuade it back to its original shape, fit a couple of reinforcement shims as necessary and you're off

    The frame and fork don't match, the fork looks newer. Check the frame for crash damage. Perhaps someone sold the 531 forks but more likely the frame came with heavy forks and someone replaced them with 501 as an upgrade. It all looks good stuff to my eye.
