Getting down to some bare metal. The pitting is worse along the sides of the top tube, but could be worse. Trying some curerust prior to filling with primer.

Yes, that's the plan. Doing the lining might be tricky, still there's no rush and I have plenty of other projects on the go. I'll try and put as much origin stuff back on as possible, might even go for a Brooks saddle. Never ventured there before! Got the worst of the rust off now, it seems to...

Made a start on the rust, Evaporust and wire brush so far. There are a few areas where pitting is quite deep, but nothing structural so far. Can see a lot more of the original Paint work now.

I think I'll try a few thinks and see what works. Cautiously though!

I'll get some Jenolite and use a brush gently. See how much is loose and whats left after that. It does not look so bad in reality, I think the photo's make it look worse than it is. There are a couple of areas of concern, but feels solid enough. if all's good then use some Curerust and lots...

Re: Re: Genuine answer, I don't know yet. First stage is get rid of the rust and see how bad it is. I am hoping plenty of primer will do it.

Not sure yet, my plans for this one has changed a bit. Heading to a more traditional re-build so may do.

Got there in the end. Kept working away at it and once I could turn it 360 easily just needed to find a way to pull it out. After a few attempt the use of a crow bar under the vice got it moving. Nice to see the number match, don't thing there is any lasting damage done.

Well I hope so, I think the frame is sound enough. I'd like to keep the stem if I can now it on the move. I guess if the projects stacked up financially it would be a business not a hobby, but I do keep track of expense. on this one I have sold some old parts and got back nearly half what I...

Re: Re: Clean it up carefully, paint it up and probably rebuild the bike with some of the old components salvaged. I was going to use it as a winter bike, but as it was pointed out to me this could be a bit too good for that. Could be my first something like original bike as I have tended to...

Interesting, a more general heat I guess with the air. The blow torch I have isn't hot enough to braze with, but can remove lugs with a bit of mechanical help. My be a bit more localised too perhaps. I'll give it some more thought while soaking it longer. I was hoping that now I have it on the...

I am assuming this was with stem still stuck and not moving? I can already get half a turn and 1/4 turn is easy to move. I am hoping freezing alone will do the job now. What is your heat gun? I have a small Camping Gaz blow torch I was intending to use.

Ok thanks, yes your right, not tried this before. I was planing to cool first then heat up. My logic being the aluminium will contract more than the steel and if I did it the other way round it could be counter productive. Was planning to empty the stem of +gas then put back in the vice as...

Still hanging on! got about half a turn on it, but no sign of coming out. Time to open the freeze kit i think

Well ordered the +Gas and a freeze kit then went out to take off the head badge and try a better set up. Badge off ok and looks like brass one although silver on the back. Found some decent paintwork at last. While it was set up I thought I'd have another go and with a loud crack I go some...
